SUMMARY:Yoav Horesh: The Village
DESCRIPTION:The Schiltkamp Gallery is proud to display 30 black and white photographs by Yoav Horesh\, a Maine-based photographer and arts educator who has intimately documented his new home in Kittery. Named Admiralty Village\, it is a unique place — it was originally home to Portsmouth Navy Yard workers in the 1940s. The neighborhood was established to support a flourishing maritime endeavor during wartime. Today\, with 225 double units and 150 single-family homes\, some of its residents are still part of the Naval industry in Kittery\, though many units were sold to small families and individuals who make up the contemporary fabric of a humble community on the Maine Seacoast.

SUMMARY:Colloquium Speaker Series: Amy Frazier
DESCRIPTION:A Geographic Approach for Co-designing and Implementing ‘30×30’ Conservation Goals\n\nThe world is at a tipping point for biodiversity\, with over a million species threatened with extinction and climate change driving a redistribution of life on Earth. The recent Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework addresses some of these grand challenges by recommending that at least 30% of land and water be protected by 2030 (colloquially called “30×30”). However\, while agreements like these are a good start\, they are rarely successful in practice\, in part because there is often a disconnect between the geographic data and models being produced by scientists and the information that is needed for conservation decision-making on the ground. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Frazier will discuss how her team is working with various partners around the world to implement conservation projects to protect the planet and how an effective co-design approach can overcome some of the challenges of using geographic methods for conservation decision-making. Woven throughout are examples of how a geographic approach\, and particularly an understanding of the impacts of scale on analyses\, can enhance this decision-making. \nAmy Frazier is the Jack and Laura Dangermond Endowed Chair of Conservation Science at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She previously held faculty appointments at Arizona State University and Oklahoma State University. Dr. Frazier holds an A.B. in environmental earth science from Dartmouth College\, an M.A. in geography from West Chester University\, and a Ph.D. in geography from the University at Buffalo. Dr. Frazier’s research focuses on integrating remote sensing\, GIS\, and landscape ecology to study global environmental change\, specifically to prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

SUMMARY:The Power of Mapmaking in 17th-Century New England
DESCRIPTION:A map made by the Pequot Sachem Robin Cassacinamon during negotiations with the English colonist George Denison in 1662. It delineates Pequot Territory along the Connecticut Coastline\, land also claimed by the English. Courtesy of Massachusetts State Archives. \n  \nFor the English and Algonquian inhabitants of 17th-century New England\, paper maps were a rare and powerful tool. Mapmakers created them to establish borders\, facilitate cross-cultural communication\, and record spatial information. But maps were also used to misinform\, steal land\, and erase Indigenous cultural presence. In this talk\, Nathan Braccio\, Assistant Professor of History at Clark University\, will explore how both Algonquian-speaking communities and English colonists made maps as tools in a struggle for cultural and physical control of the Northeast. In doing so\, he will investigate how maps\, including those that we interact with in the present day\, promote particular value-laden ways of understanding the world. \nThis event continues the Roots of Everything\, a lecture series sponsored by Early Modernists Unite (EMU)—a faculty collaborative bringing together scholars of medieval and early modern Europe and America—in conjunction with the Alice Coonley Higgins Institute for Arts and Humanities. The series highlights various aspects of modern existence originating in the early modern world by connecting past and present knowledge. \nWith thanks to the Department of History at Clark University for its support. \nAdmission is free and open to the public. \nAlso streamed live – register now: https://bit.ly/rootsmapmaking \n\nAbout the Speaker \nNathan Braccio is a historian of early modern New England. His research focuses on Indigenous and environmental history. Prior to coming to Clark\, he taught at Lesley University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Utah State University. His current book project\, Creating New England\, Defending the Northeast: Contested Algonquian and English Spatial Worlds\, 1500–1700\, investigates the different ways Algonquian-speaking peoples and Puritan colonists marked\, described\, and mapped the landscape. Braccio’s next project explores the culture of agrarian violence in colonial America. He earned his doctorate from the University of Connecticut and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from American University.
