SUMMARY:Counternarratives: Repositioning the News
DESCRIPTION:Alexandra Bell\n\n\n\nAlexandra Bell is an interdisciplinary artist who considers the ways media frameworks control how narratives involving Black communities are depicted and in turn disseminated under the aegis of journalistic “objectivity.” She accumulates news records\, mines editorial databases\, and restructures textually and visually produced narratives to control the elasticity of language and image. By physically outlining and revising editorial frameworks\, she attempts to wrestle media depictions from dominant institutions and impart the power of interpretation and definition to the collective public. \n\n\n\nShe is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award (2018)\, Catchlight Fellowship (2019)\, Soros Equality Fellowship (2019)\, Sarah Arison Artadia Award (2020)\, and a Radcliffe Fellowship at Harvard University (2022). \n\n\n\nShe received her B.A. in Humanities from University of Chicago and an M.S. from Columbia University’s School of Journalism.

SUMMARY:Older Jews and the Holocaust Symposium
DESCRIPTION:28 April 2025 |1 – 4 p.m. | Rose Library \n Asher Lecture Series  \nOlder Jews and the Holocaust Symposium \nSpeakers:Joanna Sliwa (Historian\, Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) \nElizabeth Anthony (Director\, Visiting Scholar Programs\,  Jack Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust  Studies\, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum\, Washington\, DC) \nMichael Geheran (Deputy Director\, Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies\, United States Military Academy at West Point\, New York) \nDiscussant:Glenn Dynner (Carl and Dorothy Bennett Professor of Judaic Studies\, Director of the Bennett Center at Fairfield University) \nOlder Jews and the Holocaust is a project dedicated to uncovering the often-overlooked experiences of elderly Jews during and after the Holocaust. While many were tragically murdered\, some survived and rebuilt their lives. This project moves beyond the conventional focus on their vulnerability and loss\, instead highlighting the resilience and continuity of their prewar lives through the horrors of Nazi persecution and into the postwar period. It examines how they coped with trauma and how families\, communities\, and organizations responded to their unique needs. \nThis project is undertaken with assistance from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany\, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Finance and the Foundation Remembrance\, Responsibility and Future\, as well as the Ernest Hecht Charitable Foundation.  A volume by the same title will be co-published by Wayne State University Press and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in spring 2026. \nWatch recording of event \n \n \n \nClark Symposium sponsored by the Asher Family Fund

SUMMARY:The Armenian Woman\, Minoritarian Agency\, and the Making of Iranian Modernity\, 1860–1979
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \nHouri Berberian (Professor of History & Meghrouni Family Presidential Chair in Armenian Studies\, School of Humanities. Director of the Center for Armenian Studies)Talinn Grigor (Professor of Art and Architectural History\, Modern and Contemporary Global Architecture and Art Critical\, Race\, Feminist\, and (post) Colonial Theory) \nHouri Berberian and Talinn Grigor offer the first history of Armenian women in modern Iran. Foregrounding the work of Armenian women’s organizations\, the authors trace minoritarian politics and the shifting relationships among doubly minoritized Armenian female subjects\, Iran’s central nodes of power\, and the Irano-Armenian patriarchal institutions of church and political parties. \nEngaging broader considerations around modernization\, nationalism\, and feminism\, this book makes a conceptually rich contribution to how we think about the history of women and minoritized peoples. Berberian and Grigor read archival\, textual\, visual\, and oral history sources together and against one another to challenge conventional notions of “the archive” and transform silences and absences into audible and visual presences. Understanding minoritarian politics as formulated by women through their various forms of public and intellectual activisms\, they provide a groundbreaking intervention in Iran’s history of modernization\, Armenian diasporic history\, and Iranian and Armenian feminist historiography. \nSponsored by the Friends of Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marian Mugar Professor in Armenian Genocide Studies

SUMMARY:Public History Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION CLOSED — TOUR FULL \n\n\n\nMusicians\, manufacturers\, a laundress and a Swedish immigrant — the history of this neighborhood is remarkable not just because of its many examples of distinctive architecture\, but because of the colorful stories of the men and women who initially shaped it. Join students in Clark’s Public History course for a walking tour that takes us back in time to the Gilded Age of the late 19th century. Hear about the homes\, their inhabitants\, and the community’s change over time!  \n\n\n\nThe tour is part of Preservation Worcester’s Jane Week programming. Jane Week — named for Jane Jacobs\, an urban theorist and activist who championed a community-based approach to city building — gives Worcester residents and visitors a chance to connect to each other\, explore Worcester by foot and participate in interesting discussions on how we can enhance the design and function of our city.
