SUMMARY:David Murray headlines Geller Jazz Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Geller Jazz Series at Clark University is proud to present an extraordinary evening of jazz featuring legendary saxophonist and composer David Murray\, performing with both the David Murray Quartet and the David Murray Octet. This one-night event\, Tradition in Motion\, offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience Murray’s music in two distinct ensemble settings\, highlighting the breadth and depth of his artistic vision. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince his arrival in New York in 1975\, David Murray has established himself as one of the most prominent saxophone players and jazz leaders. He has released over 200 albums under his own name\, working with the likes of Max Roach\, Randy Weston\, Pharoah Sanders\, McCoy Tyner\, Taj Mahal\, Mal Waldron\, Amiri Baraka\, Jerry Garcia\, and Quest Love\, to name just a few. A well-known bandleader and a noteworthy composer/arranger\, Murray’s memorable melodies and approach to improvisation are instantly recognizable. Even in his music’s freest flights\, he acknowledges the gravity of a tradition he honors more than most\, combining all of his influences: gospel\, jazz\, free/avant-garde jazz\, R&B\, and\, in his associations with writers\, poetry. \n\n\n\nThe David Murray Quartet showcases Murray’s intimate\, expressive side\, emphasizing improvisational dialogue\, groove\, and lyricism. In contrast\, the David Murray Octet expands the sonic palette\, drawing on Murray’s long-standing engagement with extended forms\, layered compositions\, and rich ensemble textures. Together\, these performances will reflect Murray’s singular ability to move fluidly between small-group intensity and larger-scale compositional power. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets
