SUMMARY:The William V. Shannon'47\, LITT.D.'64 Spring 2026 Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Party at the Ballot Box\n\n\n\nThe Spring 2026 William V. Shannon’47\, LITT.D. ’64 Lecture will be presented by Dr. Melissa Michelson\, Dean of Arts and Sciences at Menlo College\, she will speak on her new book titled\, Party at the Ballot Box.  \n\n\n\nBlack voters continue to transform America’s electoral landscape and can play a powerful role in determining the outcome of elections. In Party at the Ballot Box\, Melissa R. Michelson\, Stephanie L. DeMora\, and Sarah V. Hayes argue that Black Americans vote as a celebration of community\, and that cultivating that sense of community is an effective means of increasing Black voter turnout. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Michelson is Dean of Arts & Sciences at Menlo College. She earned her BA at Columbia University and her PhD in Political Science from Yale University. She is past president of the American Political Science Association (APSA) Latino Caucus and of the APSA LGBT Caucus. She is a nationally recognized expert in voter mobilization\, Latino politics\, and LGBTQ politics. She is the award-winning co-author of eight books\, including Mobilizing Inclusion: Transforming the Electorate through Get-Out-the-Vote Campaigns and a popular textbook on California Politics. The subject of this talk and her most recent book\, Party at the Ballot Box: Mobilizing Black Women Voters\, was released by NYU Press last year. Dr. Michelson’s current projects include ongoing research on how best to motivate turnout among low-propensity voters and newly reenfranchised voters\, and the power of drag performers to increase participation. In her spare time\, she knits and runs marathons. She lives in California with her husband\, with whom she has four sons. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\nThis event is sponsored by the Political Science Department through the William V. Shannon ’47 LITT.D. ’64 Endowed Memorial Fund.

SUMMARY:Come for the Wrestling\, Stay for the Gospel: Christian Television in the Middle East (1981–2000)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Febe Armanios (Philip Battell and Sarah Frances Cowles Stewart Professor of History\, Middlebury College) \n\n\n\nModerator: Dr. Elyse Semerdjian (Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marian Mugar Chair of Armenian Genocide Studies; Professor\, Department of History) \n\n\n\nThis presentation will provide an overview of the history of Christian television in the Middle East. Specifically\, it explores the rise of the region’s first Christian television station\, which was established in war-torn South Lebanon in 1981. In collaboration with a local Christian militia and Israeli political leaders\, eschatologically minded Americans funded and operated this channel\, believing that their evangelism would hasten Christ’s Second Coming. Over nearly two decades\, the terrestrial (and later satellite) channel would introduce millions of viewers to wholesome American family programming\, American sports like professional wrestling and football\, and a specific style of Arab televangelism heretofore unfamiliar in the region. The talk will relate the role of local interlocutors in promoting this station\, explore the messianic vision of its backers\, and consider the political and religious perspectives of its supporters and detractors. \n\n\n\nReception to follow. \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Friends of the Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marian Mugar Professor in Armenian Genocide Studies

SUMMARY:To Talk or Not to Talk? Social Psychological Perspectives on Dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians in the Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Slieman Halabi: Wuppertal University \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis talk offers insights into how Israelis and Palestinians living in Europe make sense of asymmetries in power through processes of (dis)identification with the homeland\, constructions of moral responsibility\, and orientations toward action. The analysis draws on a dialogue group that met over a period of five months\, beginning one day after the October 7th attacks\, and continuing through a combination of online and in-person meetings during the devastating war in Gaza. \n\n\n\nDiaspora identity plays a central role in shaping engagement with homeland politics. Social psychology has understood identification with groups and nations as a process of self-categorization determined by individual’s choice to identify or not identify with the group. Nation-states actively sustain this process by shaping the extent to which national identities are kept alive through practices of banal nationalism. For stateless groups\, sustaining national identity often requires more proactive engagement with collective memory and national narratives. How do these disparities manifest in dialogue encounters? \n\n\n\nOnline talk\, register here for zoom link: tinyurl.com/IP-dialogue or scan the QR-code. \n\n\n\nSponsored by Peace and Conflict Studies and the Department of Psychology

SUMMARY:Feeling and Knowing: An Uprooting of Things
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to feel things we know? How do we know what we feel? When do our emotions capture the truth\, and when do they deceive us? This Clark faculty roundtable will showcase lightning talks on the early modern roots of how we think about emotions today. It will examine how we can look to the past\, not for answers to our present realities but to offer new insights on who we have always been. Faculty will share snippets from their research about the ways emotions manifest to determine how we know ourselves and engage with each other.  \n\n\n\nFeatured speakers will include Lisa Kasmer (English)\, Justin Shaw (English)\, and Wiebke Deimling (Philosophy). Kathleen Palm Reed (Psychology) will offer commentary. Benjamin Korstvedt (Visual and Performing Arts) will moderate. \n\n\n\nThis event continues the Roots of Everything\, a lecture series sponsored by Early Modernists Unite (EMU)—a faculty collaborative bringing together scholars of medieval and early modern Europe and America—in conjunction with the Alice Coonley Higgins Institute for Arts and Humanities. The series highlights various aspects of modern existence originating in the early modern world by connecting past and present knowledge. \n\n\n\nAdmission is free and open to the public.
