SUMMARY:Animating Sculpture: AR\, Iteration\, and Public Art
DESCRIPTION:Moving Memory AR at SXSW 2026\n\n\n\nHow does Augmented Reality (AR) design evolve through iteration\, also known as repeated versioning? In this talk\, Dr. Lori Landay from Berklee College of Music discusses how she developed two AR experiences layered onto existing public sculptures—and what she learned by iterating between them. \n\n\n\nIn the first project\, Moving Memory AR\, Landay debuted playful\, motion-captured bots performing choreography around Jaume Plensa’s sculpture Alchemist at MIT in February 2025. Users responded enthusiastically\, but Landay identified several limitations she wanted to address. Her second project will bring Moving Memory AR to SXSW’s Kempelen’s Owls sculpture in Austin in March 2026\, evolving the design across four dimensions: emotional\, spatial\, technical\, and representational. Through iteration\, she expanded the bots’ emotional range and movement vocabulary\, reduced their exaggerated gender coding\, incorporated discovery-based movement requiring exploration across the sculpture’s site\, and deployed advanced Hoverlay sequences to deepen the experience. As Landay describes it\, this latest version “makes a place to bridge contradictory themes of nature and technology\, geometric and organic\, clandestine and open\, seen and hidden.” \n\n\n\nJoin us as Landay reflects on what changed between these two projects and why. She will discuss ethnographic observation methods for AR sites\, Laban Movement Analysis for expressive choreography\, advanced sequence-based authoring\, strategies for creating modular content that adapts across contexts\, and an honest assessment of what designers can and cannot anticipate without direct site experience. \n\n\n\nAdmission is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Interactive Arts Collaborative through the Arts + Technology Program at Clark University \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLori Landay\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Cultural Studies\, Visual Culture\, and New Media in the Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, is an interdisciplinary new media artist\, educator\, and scholar whose work explores the making of meaning in twentieth- and twenty-first century culture. Her award-winning creative and critical work bridges multiple media forms. She collaborates with composers\, musicians\, and dancers to investigate movement and sound in live performance\, video\, and extended reality (XR) environments. Lori was a Research Fellow at the MIT Open Documentary Lab (2022-24)\, working on Moving Realities\, an experimental project exploring connections between motion and emotion in XR. Moving Memory\, her AR installation in MIT’s Artfinity Festival (2025) and South by Southwest (2026) is part of the MIT OpenDocLab’s AR and Public Space Artist Collective Layers of Place. SUMMARY:Film screening and Q&A of ‘9/11: Reclaiming Ground Zero’
DESCRIPTION:After the 9/11 attacks\, once the smoke cleared and the rubble was removed\, New Yorkers had a city to rebuild. There was just one problem: no one could agree on what should be built. People cried. People yelled. People fought. The only thing they didn’t do was get along—until a single event changed everything. \n\n\n\nWith an Introduction and Post-Film Q&A with film producer Carolyn Lukensmeyer \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarolyn Lukensmeyer is a nationally recognized leader in democratic innovation and public engagement and founder of AmericaSpeaks. She has advised cities\, states\, federal agencies\, and international institutions on participatory governance and democracy reform. After 9/11\, Lukensmeyer helped design Listening to the City\, the 2002 public forum that brought New Yorkers together to shape the rebuilding of Ground Zero. \n\n\n\nREFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED \n\n\n\nWith support from the Francis A. Harrington Public Affairs Fund

SUMMARY:Transnational Knowledge Production and Academic Identity
DESCRIPTION:In displacement settings\, immediate survival often takes precedence—but what role does intellectual identity play in helping scholars rebuild their careers and sense of belonging? Join the Integration and Belonging Hub for the first session of our new webinar series\, Scholars in Exile – Rethinking Academic Humanitarianism. \n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsored by the Integration and Belonging Hub at Clark University \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\n\nDr. Alfred Babo: Professor of Anthropology and International Studies at Fairfield University\, and Board Member at Scholars-at-Risk.\n\n\n\nProfessor Svitlana Ovcharenko: Philosopher\, Cultural Researcher\, and Associate Researcher at the Global Governance Center\, Geneva Graduate Institute.\n\n\n\nHeba Ghannam: Syrian Egyptian Anthropologist\, Educator\, Cultural Worker\, and PhD Candidate in Anthropology at American University.\n\n\n\n\nAbout the series: Scholars in Exile – Rethinking Academic Humanitarianism. \n\n\n\nThis three-part series explores how transnational knowledge production and academic identity intersect with inclusion and exclusion. Moving beyond labels\, we examine how exiled intellectuals navigate the Global North and redefine what it means to be both a “refugee” and a high-level academic. \n\n\n\nEach session brings together displaced scholars and transnational researchers to share insights on navigating host institutions\, maintaining professional agency\, and overcoming the unique stresses of displacement.

SUMMARY:Spirituality and the Ethics of Conservation: The Collapse of Marine Fisheries in West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Presented byEmmanuel Akyeampong\, PhDEllen Gurney Professor of History and of African and African American Studies\, Harvard UniversityMinister for Worship and Formation\, Harvard University Memorial Church \n\n\n\nIn the 1960s\, economist and anthropologist Polly Hill dubbed Ghanaians “Pan-African fisherman.” Ghanaian fishermen could be found all along the West African coast from the Gambia to the Niger Delta. Today\, Ghana accounts for about 70 to 80 percent of all pelagic fish catches (sardines\, anchovies\, herring\, mackerel) in the Gulf of Guinea. Yet in the past two to three decades\, annual catches of small pelagic fish there have declined precipitously\, plummeting from 270\,000 metric tons in 1990s to 16\,000 metric tons in 2016. The factors accounting for the decline are complex: overfishing\, ocean warming\, the menace of foreign industrial trawlers\, and illegal\, unreported\, and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices. The collapse of marine fisheries has generated a debate about customary practices rooted in indigenous religion that treated the sea as sacred space and regulated fishing practices. Has social change and religious pluralism undermined the ethics of conservation? How can the ethics of conservation be rehabilitated as part of the multi-pronged effort to revive marine fisheries along the West African coast? \n\n\n\nAdmission to the talk is free and open to the public\, and lunch will be provided. Guests are encouraged to arrive at 11:45am for refreshments. \n\n\n\nSponsored as part of the Leir Lecture Series by the School of Climate\, Environment\, and Society; the Alice Coonley Higgins Institute for Arts and Humanities; the Marsh Institute; the Center for Gender\, Race\, and Area Studies; and the Departments of English: of History; of Language\, Literature\, and Culture; and of Sustainability and Social Justice at Clark University \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the SpeakerEmmanuel Akyeampong is the Ellen Gurney Professor of History and of African and African American Studies at Harvard University\, and the Minister for Worship and Formation at Harvard University Memorial Church. He served as the Oppenheimer Faculty Director of the Harvard Center for African Studies from July 2016 to June 2023. Akyeampong is a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and a Corresponding Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (UK). He obtained his PhD in History from the University of Virginia in 1993\, and his MDiv from Andover Newton Theological School in 2014. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Ghana in 2018\, and an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Cape Coast in 2023. Akyeampong is the author and editor of several books and articles including Independent Africa: The First Generation of Nation Builders (2023); Between the Sea and the Lagoon: An Eco-Social History of the Anlo of Southeastern Ghana (2001); and Drink\, Power\, and Cultural Change: A Social History of Alcohol in Ghana\, c.1800 to Recent Times (1996). He served as co-chief editor with Henry Louis Gates\, Jr.\, for the Dictionary of African Biography\, 6 vols. (2012). SUMMARY:The William V. Shannon'47\, LITT.D.'64 Spring 2026 Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Party at the Ballot Box\n\n\n\nThe Spring 2026 William V. Shannon’47\, LITT.D. ’64 Lecture will be presented by Dr. Melissa Michelson\, Dean of Arts and Sciences at Menlo College\, she will speak on her new book titled\, Party at the Ballot Box.  \n\n\n\nBlack voters continue to transform America’s electoral landscape and can play a powerful role in determining the outcome of elections. In Party at the Ballot Box\, Melissa R. Michelson\, Stephanie L. DeMora\, and Sarah V. Hayes argue that Black Americans vote as a celebration of community\, and that cultivating that sense of community is an effective means of increasing Black voter turnout. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Michelson is Dean of Arts & Sciences at Menlo College. She earned her BA at Columbia University and her PhD in Political Science from Yale University. She is past president of the American Political Science Association (APSA) Latino Caucus and of the APSA LGBT Caucus. She is a nationally recognized expert in voter mobilization\, Latino politics\, and LGBTQ politics. She is the award-winning co-author of eight books\, including Mobilizing Inclusion: Transforming the Electorate through Get-Out-the-Vote Campaigns and a popular textbook on California Politics. The subject of this talk and her most recent book\, Party at the Ballot Box: Mobilizing Black Women Voters\, was released by NYU Press last year. Dr. Michelson’s current projects include ongoing research on how best to motivate turnout among low-propensity voters and newly reenfranchised voters\, and the power of drag performers to increase participation. In her spare time\, she knits and runs marathons. She lives in California with her husband\, with whom she has four sons. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\nThis event is sponsored by the Political Science Department through the William V. Shannon ’47 LITT.D. ’64 Endowed Memorial Fund.

SUMMARY:Come for the Wrestling\, Stay for the Gospel: Christian Television in the Middle East (1981–2000)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Febe Armanios (Philip Battell and Sarah Frances Cowles Stewart Professor of History\, Middlebury College) \n\n\n\nModerator: Dr. Elyse Semerdjian (Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marian Mugar Chair of Armenian Genocide Studies; Professor\, Department of History) \n\n\n\nThis presentation will provide an overview of the history of Christian television in the Middle East. Specifically\, it explores the rise of the region’s first Christian television station\, which was established in war-torn South Lebanon in 1981. In collaboration with a local Christian militia and Israeli political leaders\, eschatologically minded Americans funded and operated this channel\, believing that their evangelism would hasten Christ’s Second Coming. Over nearly two decades\, the terrestrial (and later satellite) channel would introduce millions of viewers to wholesome American family programming\, American sports like professional wrestling and football\, and a specific style of Arab televangelism heretofore unfamiliar in the region. The talk will relate the role of local interlocutors in promoting this station\, explore the messianic vision of its backers\, and consider the political and religious perspectives of its supporters and detractors. \n\n\n\nReception to follow. \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Friends of the Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marian Mugar Professor in Armenian Genocide Studies
