SUMMARY:From Personal Responsibility to Systemic Failure: the Blame Divide in American Politics
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores how liberals and conservatives differ in whom they blame for social problems -individuals or systems- and how these blame patterns shape our emotions and policy preferences. Yet beneath the heated rhetoric of America’s culture war lies a surprising finding: There are fundamental similarities in how people across the political spectrum reason about blame and responsibility. The speaker will draw on decades of psychological research on these topics\, summarized in her recent book (see https://gailsahar.com/). \n\n\n\nJane Oxford Keiter Professor of Psychology at Wheaton College in Massachusetts. Author of the book: Blame and Political Attitudes: The Psychology of America’s Culture War (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2023). \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Peace and Conflict Studies and the Department of Psychology.

SUMMARY:An Evening of Music from fin-de-siècle Vienna
DESCRIPTION:  Worcester Chamber Music Society continues its 20th Anniversary Season with an evocative program drawn from fin de siècle Vienna\, a moment of radical transformation at the turn of the 20th century. Featuring Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata\, Anton Webern’s Drei Stücke for cello and piano and Five Pieces for string quartet\, and Arnold Schoenberg’s lush\, expressionist masterpiece Verklärte Nacht\, the concert traces the dissolution of Romanticism and the emergence of a bold new musical language. Performed by WCMS artists\, the program offers an intimate and powerful exploration of emotional intensity\, innovation\, and the birth of musical modernism. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nYou can also watch the livestream on the Visual and Performing Arts Department’s YouTube page\, linked here.

SUMMARY:Geography Colloquium Series: Dr. Erica Smithwick
DESCRIPTION:Will the most damaging wildfire occur in the East?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2024 and 2025\, thousands of wildfires burned in novel settings across the East\, including unprecedented fires in populated regions like Long Island\, New York\, Massachusetts\, and the Carolinas.  While fires in the East have been considered rare\, intensifying drought combined with limited preparedness could portend significant vulnerabilities in the future.  Comparing wildfires in the West to wildland fire management in the East\, this talk will explore the environmental\, social\, and governance frontiers in understanding this region’s potential risk. \n\n\n\nDr. Erica Smithwick\, Distinguished Professor of Geography at Penn State\, is a landscape and ecosystem ecologist. She is the Director of the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute\, and Associate Director of the Institute of Energy and the Environment. Smithwick leads the Penn State Climate Consortium\, which brings together interdisciplinary researchers in partnership with society to develop climate solutions. Additionally\, she serves as program co-chair for Transdisciplinary Research on Environment and Society. Smithwick is also a former director of the Ecology Institute and the Center for Landscape Dynamics.

SUMMARY:From impacts to impact: A diverse journey through applied data science
DESCRIPTION:This talk will summarize Principal Data Scientist Ross Potter’s diverse research experience in applied data science covering two broad topics. Firstly\, his Ph.D. and postdoctoral research — numerically modeling the formation of asteroid impact craters. He will cover how this modeling is done\, why it is needed\, and applications to human and robotic planetary missions to ultimately understand the formation of solar system bodies. Secondly\, scientometrics — quantifying aspects of science and scientific research. He will explain why and to whom this area is of increasing importance\, particularly for research management and government policy\, and briefly discuss how a range of data science and statistical techniques such as topic modeling\, network analysis and anomaly detection can be applied across physical\, life and social sciences. \n\n\n\nPotter is Principal Data Scientist at Clark for the recently launched project CROSSROADS (Creating Robust Opportunities for Student Success through Real-world\, Organized\, and Applied Data Science)\, funded by NSF. He has undergraduate and graduate degrees in geophysics and planetary science\, respectively\, from Imperial College London. \n\n\n\nHe completed postdocs at the NASA-affiliated Lunar and Planetary Institute\, Houston\, and Brown University before returning to the UK. There\, he transitioned to industry working for a travel company and then analytics firm\, Clarivate\, where he created a new indicator assessing the impact of academic research by collaboration type. He has published research in a diverse set of journals including Geophysical Research Letters\, Meteoritics and Planetary Science\, Nature Communications\, npj Ocean Substantiality\, and Scientometrics.
