SUMMARY:Davis Baird: Between the Lines
DESCRIPTION:A Goddard Library Book Talk \n\n\n\nPlease join us for a book talk by Davis Baird\, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy\, as he shares his latest book\, Natural Religion\, a None’s Journey of Religious Discovery (Wipf and Stock\, 2025). \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be available. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book \n\n\n\n‘This book began with a trunk of manuscripts written by my grandfather\, Earl Clement Davis (1876-1953) who was a Unitarian minister from 1905-1953. Born a year after he died\, I never knew him. \n\n\n\nGrowing up without any religion\, I was surprised to discover in these century-old writings a compelling approach to religion\, one that resonates with the struggles we face today. \n\n\n\nMy grandfather denied any supernatural aspects of religion. He was an enthusiastic advocate for science. He vigorously argued against all authoritarian forms of governance—religious and civil. \n\n\n\nHe believed in human divinity—the “living God”—the power of humans to pursue the ideals of truth\, beauty and goodness to make the world better\, a heaven on earth\, what I call “Natural Religion.”’ \n\n\n\nAbout the Author \n\n\n\nDavis Baird is Professor Emeritus and retired provost of Clark University. He is the author of Thing Knowledge: A Philosophy of Scientific Instruments (2004) and Inductive Logic: Inferring the Unknown (1988).

SUMMARY:GSG Colloquium Series: Dr. Gillian Galford
DESCRIPTION:Shifting Frontiers: Land-Use Transitions and Agricultural Intensification in Brazil’s Cerrado\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGillian Galford\n\n\n\nResearch Associate Professor\, Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources; Fellow of the Gund Institute for the Environment at the University of Vermont \n\n\n\nBrazil’s Cerrado\, the world’s most biodiverse savanna\, is being rapidly transformed by agriculture and global markets. In this talk\, Dr. Gillian Galford draws on geospatial and remote sensing analyses combined with geopolitical and socioeconomic perspectives to show how deforestation—primarily for pasture—often precedes cropland development. Shifts in crop rotations reveal both intensifying land use and expanding agricultural frontiers\, while global trade demand accelerates these changes. Together\, these dynamics illuminate the powerful forces reshaping one of Earth’s most critical ecosystems.

SUMMARY:Lessons and Legacies of the Holocaust: Inaugural Emerging Scholars Conference
DESCRIPTION:Higgins Lounge\, Dana Commons \n\n\n\nAlbert M. Tapper Annual Lecture \n\n\n\nKeynote: Lessons and Legacies of the Holocaust: Inaugural Emerging Scholars Conference \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Sarah Casteel (Professor of English\, Carleton University) \n\n\n\nHolocaust Studies From the Outside In: Art and Relational Thinking in Times of Crisis \n\n\n\nIn the aftermath of October 7th\, as the contemporary meaning and relevance of the Holocaust come under greater pressure\, Holocaust studies is confronting existential questions regarding its purpose and future. This talk considers how remapping the field through unconventional disciplinary\, cultural\, and geographical lenses can help scholars to navigate these challenges. In keeping with the field’s recent colonial turn\, it identifies wartime and contemporary literature and visual art that present Holocaust experience as entangled with other histories of violence. In particular\, Black writing and art about the Holocaust promote a relational understanding of shared and intersecting histories that combats contemporary polarization.  \n\n\n\nWatch recording of keynote \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKeynote address sponsored by the Albert M. Tapper Charitable Foundation  \n\n\n\n7 November – 9 November | 9:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. | Higgins LoungeDana Commons\n\n\n\nLessons and Legacies of the Holocaust: Inaugural Emerging Scholars Conference \n\n\n\nThe conference aims to bring together scholars working in different languages\, disciplines\, discourses\, and methodologies for intellectual exchange\, networking\, and mentorship. Topics include a broad variety of aspects of the Holocaust\, its causes\, history\, memory\, and representation\, and comparative approaches. This conference also serves as the sixth conference in the Strassler Center’s series of graduate student conferences. \n\n\n\nView Conference Program \n\n\n\nPresented by the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies in cooperation with the Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University (HEFNU)
