SUMMARY:Geller Jazz Series: ‘Art of the Quartet’
DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out. \n\n\n\nThe Geller Jazz Series at Clark University is proud to present an extraordinary night of jazz featuring a powerhouse ensemble of Nicholas Payton(trumpet)\, Benito Gonzalez (piano)\, Buster Williams (bass)\, and Lenny White (drums). This one-night-only performance\, the final concert of the series\, will showcase the immense talents of these jazz luminaries at the intersection of tradition and innovation. \n\n\n\nThe evening will also feature a special opening set by jazz vocalist Ekep Nkwelle and her quartet. \n\n\n\nThe Art of the Quartet is a unique gathering of four influential and visionary jazz musicians. Each member has contributed to the landscape of modern jazz with decades of groundbreaking work and collaborations with jazz legends across genres. \n\n\n\n\nNicholas Payton\, a Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer\, is known for his bold musical vision that blends the history of jazz with contemporary sounds. With a distinctive approach to trumpet playing\, Payton has created a sound that challenges and transcends traditional boundaries.\n\n\n\nBenito Gonzalez\, an acclaimed Venezuelan pianist who combines a long lineage of American jazz traditions with rhythms from around the world. He’s worked with dozens of the greats\, and is known for the Afro-Latin patterns and his rhythmic drive. Intricate solos are a cornerstone of his ensembles.\n\n\n\nBuster Williams\, a living legend in jazz bass\, has spent over five decades performing with luminaries such as Miles Davis\, Herbie Hancock\, McCoy Tyner\, Sonny Rollins\, and Wayne Shorter — to name just a few. His ability to meld intricate harmonies with deep groove has made him one of the most respected bassists in jazz history.\n\n\n\nLenny White\, a visionary drummer\, was a key figure in jazz fusion with the iconic band Return to Forever. His work in both straight-ahead jazz and fusion has set a new standard for jazz drumming with its intensity\, precision\, and creativity.\n\n\n\n\nThese four will take the stage for an evening that promises to explore the full spectrum of jazz expression\, from intense improvisation to rich\, melodic interplay. It’s a unique opportunity to hear these virtuosos push the boundaries of the genre and redefine what jazz can be. \n\n\n\nOpening the evening will be the Ekep Nkwelle Quartet\, a rising star in the jazz scene. Ekep Nkwelle\, a 25-year-old Cameroonian-American jazz vocalist\, has carved her musical path from the vibrant streets of Washington\, DC\, to the heart of New York City’s jazz scene. Her journey through the esteemed Duke Ellington School of the Arts\, Howard University\, and The Juilliard School has been extraordinary. The power of her voice has resonated with jazz luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, Russell Malone\, Cyrus Chestnut\, and Peter Washington\, along with young stars like Emmet Cohen and Endea Owens\, leading to countless collaborations. Her performances have graced iconic\, internationally renowned venues from the illustrious Radio City Music Hall\, where she shared the stage with classical virtuoso Lang Lang in collaboration with Disney.

SUMMARY:The Last of the Nightingales: Film Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of Colorfool Films \n  \nDiscussion facilitated by Clark University faculty Stephen DiRado\, Matt Malsky\, and Max Ritts \nIn the late 1960s\, Bernie Krause was a prolific composer and foley artist who pioneered synthesizers and worked with industry giants such as Francis Ford Coppola\, The Doors\, and The Rolling Stones. But after one chance encounter with the sounds of the wilderness\, he chose to change his career path\, setting out to gather wild field recordings to help battle the climate crisis using acoustic information. More than half a century later\, his vast archive of captured soundscapes reflects dire habitat devastation in the world and yields urgent stories about the need for immediate change. \nThe Last of the Nightingales\, directed by Masha Karpoukhina\, invites audiences to experience the rich acoustic beauty of the living world through Bernie’s ears\, exceptionally attuned over decades. More than half of the ecosystems recorded in his immense archive are now completely silent or will never be heard in their original voice again due to the profound effects of climate change on the stability\, biodiversity\, and resilience of virtually all ecosystems on Earth. As more and more soundscapes fall silent\, Bernie reminds us that it’s not too late to begin listening. \nAdmission to the screening is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be offered. \nSponsored by the Alice Coonley Higgins Institute for Arts and Humanities and the Environmental Humanities Research Collaborative at Clark University

SUMMARY:Landscapes of Decline in 1980s Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:Professor Mike Dwyer of Arcadia University will discuss his new book\, Tinsel and Rust: How Hollywood Manufactured the Rust Belt. \nWhat is the Rust Belt? This seemingly simple question is surprisingly difficult to answer. In response to the difficulty that scholars and commentators alike have faced in defining the term (is it a place? a historical period? an economic condition?)\, this presentation redirects our attention toward the ongoing cultural production of the idea of the Rust Belt through popular film and media. \nBorrowing the concept of “landscape” from cultural geographers like Don Mitchell\, Dwyer analyzes the way that Hollywood film in the 1980s trained Americans to see smokestacks and factories as symbols of inescapable toxicity and decay\, rather than sites of ongoing struggle and negotiation involving actual human beings. \n

SUMMARY:Art of the Viennese Fortepiano
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia Berry\, one of North America’s leading exponents of historical keyboard instruments\, reveals how the five-octave Viennese fortepiano of the late 18th century inspired Haydn\, Mozart\, and Beethoven at different points in their lives. SUMMARY:Yoav Horesh: The Village
DESCRIPTION:The Schiltkamp Gallery is proud to display 30 black and white photographs by Yoav Horesh\, a Maine-based photographer and arts educator who has intimately documented his new home in Kittery. Named Admiralty Village\, it is a unique place — it was originally home to Portsmouth Navy Yard workers in the 1940s. The neighborhood was established to support a flourishing maritime endeavor during wartime. Today\, with 225 double units and 150 single-family homes\, some of its residents are still part of the Naval industry in Kittery\, though many units were sold to small families and individuals who make up the contemporary fabric of a humble community on the Maine Seacoast.

SUMMARY:A/An: Book Launch and Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A Clark Faculty Series Event\nPresented by\nMandy Gutmann-Gonzalez\, MFA\nAssociate Professor of Practice in English\nClark University \nIn this book launch\, poet Mandy Gutmann-Gonzalez reads from their chapbook A/An. Using 17th century court records of the Salem Witch Trials as a sounding board\, A/An mines the archives to uncover the power and violence residing within the language of the legal system. Through a series of poems modeled after examinations of particular witches\, Gutmann-Gonzalez acts as a medium for these voices from the past. In A/An\, poetry and archive wrestle\, shattering these legal documents that act as gravestones and spilling the voices caught therein. \nAdmission is free and open to the public\, and lunch will be provided. Guests are encouraged to arrive at 11:45 a.m. for refreshments. \nThis event is sponsored by the Alice Coonley Higgins Institute for Arts and Humanities and the Department of English at Clark University. \n\nAbout the Speaker \n \nMandy Gutmann-Gonzalez is a Chilean poet and novelist working at the intersections of text\, image\, archive\, and translation. They are the author of La Pava (Ediciones Inubicalistas) and A/An (End of the Line Press). Their work has been supported by fellowships and residencies from The Bucknell Seminar for Younger Poets\, Lambda Literary\, The Center for Book Arts\, TAKT Residency in Berlin\, The Frost Place\, Studios at MASS MoCA\, the Alice Coonley Higgins Institute for Arts and Humanities\, and MacDowell. They teach creative writing at Clark University. \n  \nAbout the Book \nUsing 17th-century court records of the Salem Witch Trials as a sounding board\, A/An mines the archives to uncover the power and violence residing within the language of the legal system. As state-legislated violence\, witch hunts were constitutive to the colonial order\, reinforcing what was normal and what was aberrant. Rather than regarding the witch hunts as historical curiosity or speculating to fill the gaps\, A/An considers the court examination as poetic form\, a hybrid of legal language and lyric utterance. In these poems\, English becomes foreign to itself\, having distorted through time and slipped through the sieve of law\, through the inevitable erasures of matter and the ideological erasures of the archive: the gaps marked “[illegible due to fold in paper]\,” and the silences that remain unmarked. In a poetics of the “[…]”\, A/An engages with textual gaps as lacunae. In A/An\, poetry and archive wrestle\, shattering these legal documents that act as gravestones and spilling the voices caught therein.
