SUMMARY:David Murray headlines Geller Jazz Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Geller Jazz Series at Clark University is proud to present an extraordinary evening of jazz featuring legendary saxophonist and composer David Murray\, performing with both the David Murray Quartet and the David Murray Octet. This one-night event\, Tradition in Motion\, offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience Murray’s music in two distinct ensemble settings\, highlighting the breadth and depth of his artistic vision. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince his arrival in New York in 1975\, David Murray has established himself as one of the most prominent saxophone players and jazz leaders. He has released over 200 albums under his own name\, working with the likes of Max Roach\, Randy Weston\, Pharoah Sanders\, McCoy Tyner\, Taj Mahal\, Mal Waldron\, Amiri Baraka\, Jerry Garcia\, and Quest Love\, to name just a few. A well-known bandleader and a noteworthy composer/arranger\, Murray’s memorable melodies and approach to improvisation are instantly recognizable. Even in his music’s freest flights\, he acknowledges the gravity of a tradition he honors more than most\, combining all of his influences: gospel\, jazz\, free/avant-garde jazz\, R&B\, and\, in his associations with writers\, poetry. \n\n\n\nThe David Murray Quartet showcases Murray’s intimate\, expressive side\, emphasizing improvisational dialogue\, groove\, and lyricism. In contrast\, the David Murray Octet expands the sonic palette\, drawing on Murray’s long-standing engagement with extended forms\, layered compositions\, and rich ensemble textures. Together\, these performances will reflect Murray’s singular ability to move fluidly between small-group intensity and larger-scale compositional power. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets

SUMMARY:Ensemble Telemaque: Sounds\, Tears and Skins
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, Ensemble Télémaque created the October Lab\, an international platform for musical creation that aims to produce and disseminate new works that transcend styles and trends. To this end\, commissions are awarded to composers from around the world\, built around continually renewed themes. \n\n\n\nSounds\, Tears and Skins marks Ensemble Télémaque’s first collaboration with artists from the United States. Led by Raoul Lay\, the ensemble is commissioning this year a new generation of American composers: David Dominique\, Yu-Hui Chang\, John Aylward\, and Kate Soper\, who are developing new musical works based on French and American texts that were written in\, or left a significant imprint on\, both Marseille\, France\, and the United States. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe project also establishes a dialogue between four literary figures of the twentieth century: Claude McKay\, Mary Jayne Gold\, Franz Werfel\, and Antonin Artaud — all of whom experienced various forms of discrimination and alienation linked to either their gender\, sexuality\, race\, ethnicity\, or ideological and political convictions. \n\n\n\nThrough the 20th-century histories these literary figures trace\, our project explores the notions of travel and migration of marginalized communities who are connected by their intersections with the U.S. and Marseille\, France. Our project asks our commissioned composers to respond to the fractured moments in history that their authors experienced and the frightening similarities to our present day: comparisons that raise profound questions. \n\n\n\nOur event will consist of four works in which spoken and sung voices will engage in dialogue with the instrumental writing\, allowing the intertextuality of the diverse literary figures represented to resonate. \n\n\n\nIn spring 2026\, Ensemble Télémaque is traveling around the United States to perform the works of the four commissioned composers in concert\, before welcoming them again in Marseille for new performances in autumn 2026.

SUMMARY:Breaking $#*% On Purpose
DESCRIPTION:Allison Tanenhaus\n\n\n\nGlitch video artist Allison Tanenhaus specializes in immersive op art\, anachronistic tech mashups\, and unexpected dimensional qualities. At a time when platforms pervasively cull personal data—and digital conformity is the norm—Tanenhaus views reclaiming devices\, embracing error\, and transforming shared environments as radical acts of autonomy\, mindfulness\, and community. Her earliest digital works were created via smartphone glitch apps; her recent work in AI seeks to similarly short-circuit machine-learning processes. She manipulates the software’s lean toward logic\, producing imagery and songs steeped in the saccharine\, saturated\, and surreal. In this talk\, Tanenhaus will share her unconventional creative path\, from typographic street art to experimental AI installations\, cat stickers to electronic music collaborations. \n\n\n\nAdmission is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Interactive Arts Collaborative through the Arts + Technology Program at Clark University \n\n\n\n\nScience fiction\, literature\, and experimental cinema collide in a concert by Cosmic Lucifer featuring psychedelic visuals by Allison Tanenhaus. Join us for this special event on April 16 at 7 p.m. in Razzo Hall. Click HERE for more details. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the SpeakerAllison Tanenhaus (she/her) is a New York–born\, Somerville–based glitch media artist. Using smartphone apps\, she glitches and restitches original photos and personal artifacts into vibrant otherworldly abstractions. Made with equal parts deliberation and experimentation\, the rainbow-hued mutations take on a psychedelic life of their own. Tanenhaus’ work has been showcased in 26 countries via exhibitions\, installations\, music videos\, live performances\, and guerrilla street art. Highlights include Boston Cyberarts\, Boston Museum of Science Planetarium\, and her traveling shows “GlitchKraft” and “Haus Party.”
