Below are general policies regarding hazardous waste accumulation and management:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-satellite-accumulation-area-saa\">Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/environmental-health-and-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/140\/hazard7.avif\" alt=\"hazardous waste bottles\" class=\"wp-image-104\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Every area where chemical waste is produced and accumulated until the waste containers are full is called a Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA). Here are the rules to be followed for its management:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Waste being generated elsewhere should not be kept in this area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the area accumulates acutely hazardous waste, one quart is the maximum amount allowed to be accumulated. If not acutely hazardous, 55 gallons of waste is the limit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The SAA must be located in a dry and cool location away from direct sunlight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The SAA must have a sign with the words &#8220;Hazardous Waste Satellite Accumulation Area.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waste must be kept inside a dishwashing pan, basin or tub to prevent spills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waste must be segregated from incompatible chemicals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waste-containers\">Waste containers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/environmental-health-and-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/140\/hazard8.avif\" alt=\"a bottle of hazardous waste\" class=\"wp-image-105\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use only one container per waste stream.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The container must be compatible with the waste inside and free from cracks, leaks, corrosion or any sign of degradation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The container must be clean on the outside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never overfill a waste container. A container filled to 80% of its capacity is considered full.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycled containers must have the original label defaced to avoid confusion regarding contents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The container holding hazardous waste must be closed with a screw cap at ALL TIMES except when waste is being added.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Note: Disposal cost is based on waste type and container size, not amount of waste. Please choose a container that fits the quantity or volume and, when possible, combine compatible waste.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waste-labels\">Waste labels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Give FULL NAME of contents, no abbreviations, codes, or omission of any of the information on the label is allowed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The container holding the hazardous waste must be marked with the words &#8220;Hazardous Waste&#8221;, and must list components and their percentages(Must equal 100%).
