SUMMARY:Challenges Facing Women in STEM: Recognizing and Managing Bias and Identity Threat
DESCRIPTION:DATE: Wednesday\, April 3\, 2019. 3:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.\nLOCATION: University Center: Grace Conference Room \nThe stereotype of most science\, technology\, engineering\, and math fields is that “STEM is for men.” Additionally\, men are over-represented at almost every level of STEM participation\, both inside and outside of academia. Together\, this gender imbalance in scientific environments and the gendered nature of science stereotypes signal to women that STEM isn’t for them. Importantly\, these issues may be exacerbated for women from racial groups that are under-represented in STEM fields. This talk will identify some of the specific psychological challenges facing women in STEM and explore different ways to manage them. \nSponsored by Clark University’s Women and Gender Studies\, Physics\, Chemistry\, Math and Computer science\, Biochemistry & Molecular biology\, and Biology departments. \nDownload Flyer for further details \n

DESCRIPTION:DATE: Monday\, April 1\, 2019. Noon – 1:15 p.m.\nLOCATION: Sackler Science Center\, Room 122 \nPresented by: Elizabeth Boskey\, Ph.D. \nGender is complicated\, and so is gender care.  This talk will review the science of sexual development to demonstrate\, objectively\, that sex is more complicated than a simple binary and to look at the ways in which gender identity development appears to be affected by multiple biological processes.  It will then examine how developing a transgender surgery center in a pediatric hospital has raised issues of access\, autonomy\, and policy making in health care and discuss some of the research that has been enabled by working with the adolescent transgender population. \nDownload Flyer

DESCRIPTION:DATE:  Thursday\, March 14\, 2019. 10:25 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.\nLOCATION:  Jonas Clark Hall\, Room 001 \nPresented by: Sylvia Bashevkin \nDrawing on the cases of four senior foreign policy decision-makers appointed by US presidents since 1980 (Jeane Kirkpatrick\, Madeleine Albright\, Condolezza Rice\, and Hillary Rodham Clinton)\, Professor Sylvia Bashevkin addresses the following questions: \nWhat do we know about women’s participation in political executive roles? SUMMARY:Technologies of Resistance and New Womanhood in Contemporary Bollywood Cinema
DESCRIPTION:DATE:  Wednesday\, March 13\, 2019. Noon – 1:00 p.m.\nLOCATION:Dana Commons\, Fireside Lounge \nPresented by: Professor Ghar Siddiqui \nRecent Bollywood films like Anarkali of Aarah (Avinash Das\, 2017)\, Parched (Leena Yadav\, 2015)\, and Lipstick Under My Burkha (Alankrita Shrivastava\, 2016) have raised the bar on feminist work coming out of the industry but have also simultaneously been met with resistance. Lipstick Under my Burkha\, in particular\, was banned by the Indian Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for sexual explicitness and for being “too lady oriented\,” thus sparking a feminist wave of #LipstickRebellion on social media. Professor Siddiqui will examine the film and its reception as a case study for exploring the possibilities and limits of feminist consciousness. She argues that the polysemic and ideologically conflicted dimensions of these new films are a productive site of feminist expression and analysis. \nDownload Flyer \n
