These include taking MCAT preparatory courses, MCAT study guides,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/applying-medical-school\/taking-mcat-exam\/about-mcat-exam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"registering for the MCAT\">registering for the MCAT<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/applying-medical-school\/applying-medical-school-process\/applying-medical-school-amcas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"AMCAS online application\">AMCAS online application<\/a>, fees for secondary applications, and travel and lodging costs for interviews (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/financial-aid\/article\/the-cost-of-applying-to-medical-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"cost of applying to medical school\">cost of applying to medical school<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>MCAT preparatory courses (e.g.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaptest.com\/mcat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Kaplan\">Kaplan<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princetonreview.com\/medical\/mcat-test-prep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Princeton Review\">Princeton Review<\/a>) can help improve your performance on the MCAT if you take them seriously, devote sufficient time to them, and take full advantage of the many practice exams they offer (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/prehealth\/applying\/standardized-exams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Standardized Exams\">Standardized Exams<\/a>). Their costs may seem high but are not significant when viewed relative to the overall costs of your undergraduate and medical education. MCAT study guides are available at most book stores.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/prepare-mcat-exam\/practice-mcat-exam-official-low-cost-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Practice exams\">Practice exams<\/a>\u00a0are available on the AAMC website.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/applying-medical-school\/taking-mcat-exam\/about-mcat-exam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"MCAT\">MCAT<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/applying-medical-school\/applying-medical-school-process\/applying-medical-school-amcas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"AMCAS\">AMCAS<\/a> online application are both administered by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"AAMC\">AAMC<\/a>. The AAMC offers a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/fee-assistance-program\/fee-assistance-program-fap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Fee Assistance Program\">Fee Assistance Program<\/a> (FAP) to US citizens or permanent residents who would otherwise be unable to take the MCAT or apply to AMCAS-participating schools. Applicants who receive FAP waivers may also be eligible for waivers from secondary application fees (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/prehealth\/applying\/application-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Application Process\">Application Process<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Medical school tuition costs and fees vary greatly depending primarily on whether the school is public or private, and whether you are an in-state or out-of-state resident. The most reliable way to investigate tuition and fee costs is to consult the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/medical-school-admission-requirements\/medical-school-admission-requirements-msar-applicants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"MSAR\">MSAR<\/a>\u00a0or websites for individual schools (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/prehealth\/resources\/health-profession-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Health Profession Schools\">Health Profession Schools<\/a>). Medical students generally supplement personal or family resources with federally subsidized or private loans to cover these costs. Medical school financial aid offices generally provide all the information you will need on available sources of loans. Much more information on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/applying-medical-school\/preparing-med-school\/paying-medical-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"financing medical school\">financing medical school<\/a> is available on the AAMC website. After graduating from medical school, you will most probably have incurred a substantial debt.<\/p>\n<p>Three things should be emphasized relative to incurring these debts: 1) you must have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/financial-aid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"good credit rating\">good credit rating<\/a>\u00a0to be eligible for the loans in the first place, so be very careful to pay your credit card bills on time; 2) after establishing a successful practice as a doctor, you will most likely be able to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentloanhero.com\/featured\/pay-off-medical-school-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"pay off these debts\">pay off these debts<\/a>\u00a0without sacrificing other priorities; and 3) if you drop out of medical school or fail to pass the licensing exams after graduating from medical school, you will have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.debt.org\/students\/debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"incurred substantial debt\">incurred substantial debt<\/a>\u00a0and may not have the means to pay it off (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/prehealth\/applying\/what-if-im-not-accepted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"What if I'm not accepted?\">What if I&#8217;m not accepted?<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In addition to the substantial costs of tuition and fees for medical schools once you are accepted, there are several costs associated with the application process itself.
