{"id":1813,"date":"2023-05-16T13:30:33","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T17:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/commencement\/?page_id=1813"},"modified":"2023-05-16T13:30:33","modified_gmt":"2023-05-16T17:30:33","slug":"iris-knowles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/commencement\/iris-knowles\/","title":{"rendered":"Iris Knowles \u201922, MAT \u201923"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1814\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/commencement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/292\/2023\/05\/2023-Iris-Knowles-1-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Iris Knowles\" width=\"1340\" height=\"893\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Major:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/centers\/adam-institute\/master-of-arts-in-teaching\/\" aria-label=\"Master of Arts in Teaching\">Master of Arts in Teaching<\/a> (bachelor\u2019s in biology \u201922)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clark Days:<\/strong> Iris\u2019 natural sense of curiosity led her from her hometown of Clifton, New Jersey, to Clark, where she graduated with a bachelor\u2019s degree in biology in 2022. For the past academic year, Knowles has been teaching biology to freshmen at Worcester\u2019s South High School as part of her MAT training. Iris\u2019 favorite lesson plan from the past year demonstrated ocean acidification: She had her students blow into a container filled with an indicator solution called Bromothymol blue, which changes in color from blue to yellow as it becomes more acidic. Carbon dioxide from the students\u2019 respiration initiated the color change. Students were engaged in the lesson, which taught them about how the increased levels of carbon from human pollution are causing ocean acidification. At Clark, Iris was an RA, worked for admissions and in Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=355\" aria-label=\"David Hibbett\">David Hibbett<\/a>\u2019s mycology lab, and played lacrosse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Post-Commencement Plans:<\/strong> Iris will be teaching ninth-grade biology at Discovery High School in the Bronx, a borough of New York City. She\u2019s moving to the Bronx with friends from Clark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Observation:<\/strong> \u201cAs I&#8217;ve become better at lesson planning, I&#8217;ve been able to connect topics to students\u2019 lives and make lessons more exploratory.
