{"id":1718,"date":"2023-05-15T14:31:03","date_gmt":"2023-05-15T18:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/commencement\/?page_id=1718"},"modified":"2023-05-15T14:31:03","modified_gmt":"2023-05-15T18:31:03","slug":"max-tickner-ernst-23","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/commencement\/max-tickner-ernst-23\/","title":{"rendered":"Max Tickner-Ernst \u201923"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1842 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/commencement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/292\/2023\/04\/2023-Max-Tickner-Ernst-05-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Max Tickner-Ernst\" width=\"1340\" height=\"893\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Majors:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/majors-minors\/mathematics\/\" aria-label=\"Mathematics\">Mathematics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/majors-minors\/economics\" aria-label=\"economics\">economics<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Clark Days:<\/strong> Max was drawn to Clark because of the sense of community and academic philosophy. \u201cMy high school really emphasized collaboration and group problem-solving, and so does Clark,\u201d says the Lunenberg, Mass., resident who attended a charter school in Devens. \u201cIt\u2019s clearly not a competition here, like it is at other schools; it\u2019s everyone working together to understand the material.\u201d Max conducted research with mathematics <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=1214\" aria-label=\"Professor Ali Maalaoui\">Professor Ali Maalaoui<\/a> that resulted in an honors thesis; he completed another in economics with <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=637\" aria-label=\"Professor Junfu Zhang\">Professor Junfu Zhang<\/a>. He served as a teaching assistant in mathematics and data science courses and was involved with the Gryphon and Pleiades senior leadership and service honor society. And over two summers, Max interned as a financial analyst for UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, which helped him sort out his interests. He discovered he\u2019s not a fan of finance; instead, he wants to focus on something where he can apply math to solving problems, perhaps mathematical biology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Post-Commencement Plans:<\/strong> Max will start a Ph.D. program in mathematics this fall at WPI, mentored by Professor Andrea Arnold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Observation:<\/strong> \u201cAt Clark what helped my learning the most is that the classes are so small and the professors are so personable. I don\u2019t think I would have succeeded as well if I didn\u2019t have close relationships with my professors,\u201d especially Maalaoui and <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.clarku.edu\/faculty\/facultybio.cfm?id=849\" aria-label=\"Michael Satz\">Michael Satz<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/departments\/mathematics\/\" aria-label=\"Mathematics Department\">Mathematics Department<\/a>, who \u201cwould go that extra mile to meet with me and make sure I understood the
