{"id":4800,"date":"2024-01-30T20:57:21","date_gmt":"2024-01-31T01:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.golive.clarku.edu\/school-of-business\/school-of-management-and-small-business-development-center-secure-idea-lab-space\/"},"modified":"2025-03-07T12:32:32","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T17:32:32","slug":"school-of-management-and-small-business-development-center-secure-idea-lab-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/business\/news\/school-of-management-and-small-business-development-center-secure-idea-lab-space\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Business and Small Business Development Center Secure Idea Lab Space"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/som\">School of Business (School of Business)<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/clarku.edu\">Clark University<\/a> has secured a new space in the downtown Worcester area to better serve the needs of its entrepreneurial students and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/offices\/small-business-development-center\/\">Small Business Development Center (SBDC)<\/a> at Clark University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The space at 20 Franklin Street, known as The Worcester Idea Lab, is a co-working and accelerator space that will provide a downtown presence for Clark students interning with the SBDC, as well as for School of Business\u2019s Entrepreneurship and Innovation (E &amp; I) Program students. Interns working with the SBDC can use the space for meetings or interviews with small clients looking to start or grow their small business. E &amp; I students will be able to meet with other Worcester-area college students to brainstorm ideas and become more fully integrated into the broader Worcester business community, especially given the space\u2019s location next to City Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/school-of-business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024-SBDC-Downtown.jpg\" alt=\"SBDC Downtown\" class=\"wp-image-5045\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Idea Lab, owned and operated by the Worcester Business Development Corp (WBDC), is School of Business\u2019s and the SBDC\u2019s first physical expansion into the downtown area. The new space provides use of an office, conference rooms, a full kitchen, and high-speed internet connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt offers us resources where students can work on their entrepreneurial ideas and meet with small business owners, and also expands opportunities with a visible presence in the heart of the Worcester business community,\u201d Dr. David Jordan, Dean of the School of Business, said of the expansion. \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to see this new business think-tank already in action and look forward to watching our students and the SBDC continue to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>President of the WBDC, Craig L. Blais, added, \u201cThe Worcester Business Development Corporation is thrilled to partner with Clark\u2019s School of Business and the SBDC to bring its faculty, students, and clients downtown and are excited to see the formation of great connections and partnerships between our existing members and new users of the space.&nbsp; We are proud to offer flexible and affordable class A office space to help support the regions\u2019 higher education community and entrepreneurs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/school-of-business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/Headshot_Tom-Herald.jpg\" alt=\"Tom Herald\" class=\"wp-image-4927\" style=\"width:300px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark recently appointed Thomas A. Herald as Regional Director of the SBDC. A longtime adjunct faculty member for the University and the SBDC, Herald is now leading the center\u2019s initiatives to guide and support aspiring and existing small business owners and students while contributing to the region\u2019s broader business ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Herald\u2019s appointment, the SBDC at Clark also transitioned back under the purview of the School of Business. The move provides a more seamless way for School of Business students to participate in the support services offered by the SBDC to local businesses and entrepreneurs throughout Central Massachusetts via internships and project work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/school-of-business\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2024-SBDC-Downtown3.jpg\" alt=\"SBDC Downtown\" class=\"wp-image-5046\" style=\"width:300px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am genuinely excited to be part of the Clark SBDC internship expansion downtown.&nbsp; Every time a student is paired with an entrepreneur and a business mentor, real synergy takes place.&nbsp; This expansion showcases that dynamic as a collaboration between the WBDC, MSBDC, Clark University, the SBA, and City, State, and Federal
