Partner schools represent the neighborhood\u2019s diversity fully. Woodland Academy in fact has had the largest proportion of English learners in Massachusetts for several years. The partner schools reflect a wide range of the challenges and possibilities of reform, and so an opportunity for co-learning and cross-fertilization with the Adam Institute. All of the partner schools collaborate in support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/adam-institute\/master-of-arts-in-teaching\/\">Master of Arts in Teaching program<\/a>, each hosting a cohort of students annually.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group section is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-university-park\">University Park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center padded-inline-sleight\">University Park Campus School (UPCS) stands tall in the history of Adam Institute work. UPCS was co-developed with Clark in the 1990s to provide new educational opportunity to Main South students and to enhance the revitalization work in the neighborhood. Subsequently, four partner schools, including UPCS, have qualified as innovation schools with Adam Institute support. This status has a bearing on the flexibility the schools have in certain areas, including hiring, and enhances their ability to work with the Adam Institute in partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Closely related to the work of UPCS, since 2012 the Institute has strived to be a supportive partner in the effort to rebuild culture and practice at Claremont Academy. The institute supports the efforts of the school\u2019s leaders and teachers to develop practice and a college-going culture at Claremont. In the past, it has been recognized by the federal Department of Education as a \u201cBlue Ribbon\u201d school and been recognized for its professional development practice. The school strives to build a coherent culture and instructional practice for its students. Its instructional practice focuses on inclusion and strategic differentiation. Since 2012, the partnership has supported the rebuilding of Claremont culture and practice after several years of underperformance, helping to qualify the school as an Innovation School. Partnership work focuses on collaborative learning practices for teachers (including teacher research), the MAT program, and supplemental academic and college readiness programs for students. Serving about 250 students from the Main South neighborhood\u2014most of whom speak a language other than English at home\u2014UPCS has built a strong and steadily improving record of preparing all students for postsecondary education since its founding in 1997. This success reflects the school\u2019s aligned practice, culture, and partnership. South High\u2019s core school values are collaboration, respect, youth philanthropy, and community service. South High hosts as many as ten Master of Arts in Teaching interns yearly. Known for its culture of curiosity, creativity, and collaboration, our school takes pride in students\u2019 achievements, including success in Robotics and Math Teams. Focused on STEAM education, our hands-on STEAM Lab encourages problem-solving and innovation. With nearly half of our students as Multilingual Learners, we celebrate the diverse perspectives they bring. Students were also the beneficiary. From the beginning, the students in our neighborhood felt connected to the University. It was a place where they felt they belonged. They were welcomed there, and came to see themselves as college-worthy well before they applied. Students went to the library, to the athletic center; they played football in the President\u2019s backyard. The lines separating the University\u2019s campus and ours were so blurred we all felt at home no matter where we were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Read more about Ricci Hall<\/summary>\n<p>In 2012 I took on the job of restarting another neighborhood school in the Main South area; this one, Claremont Academy, was not far from the University\u2019s campus either. In fact, the University played a key role working with the Superintendent to restart the school with the idea of giving all students a college-ready experience. Frankly, without the support of the University and the thriving partnership that existed I would not have taken on the challenge. The work we had to do at Claremont was simply too big to do it alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">As I look back, I recognize how truly powerful this partnership was. It transformed so many people; I certainly would not be the educator or person I am today had it not been for the relationships we forged together. Now I am that school\u2019s principal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Read more about Dan St. Louis<\/summary>\n<p>As an undergraduate, I had ended up somewhat accidentally in an education course, having never really thought about a career as a teacher \u2014 but after observing the student-centered, active, fun, and loving style of classes at UPCS, my mind increasingly turned down that path. The school principal encouraged me to complete my master\u2019s degree at the school. In my afternoon education classes I learned about pedagogy, inquiry, student engagement, and building relationships. Then I put these ideas into practice during the school day with master teachers who were often Clark instructors as well. I wrote up elaborate learning plans, assessed their effectiveness, reflected with my peers and professors, and made adjustments for future lessons. Upon finishing my degree, I was hired to teach English and history at the school, and soon after learned to be a teacher mentor for the next generation of master\u2019s students coming through Clark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Most of our teachers have taken this path, trained by Clark in effective pedagogy for urban students, and in turn becoming the teacher mentors. We have probably mentored a hundred teachers over the past twenty years, some of whom work here, and many of whom are teaching elsewhere around the city, state, and country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the system works. The small school that started with 35 neighborhood kids has turned into a powerful example of urban education, drawing many visitors from around the country. People come to see a diverse population of students from a low-income neighborhood achieve highly in an all-honors curriculum that defies the achievement gap. Unlike traditional honors courses, ours strive to support struggling learners, to build relationships that inspire students, and to build self-advocacy and self-respect. The majority of our students enter 7<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;grade far below grade-level, but by 10<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;grade score \u201cproficient\u201d and \u201cadvanced\u201d on state tests. Students who once struggled to read in 7<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;grade end up taking Advanced Placement classes and going to college. It can be a long process over six years, but to see this transformation in our students is the definition of job satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the school\u2019s success is due to the style of pedagogy espoused in the Clark program, but another important piece is the intrinsic connection to the University. Our kids use Clark\u2019s gymnasium and library, take free courses, and many even receive free tuition upon graduating. They interact daily with Clark MATs and undergrad observers. They see and get to know the Clark professors supervising these beginning teachers.
