What courses should I take in my first year to see if this is the right major for me?<\/summary>\n

The best course you can take to look into a Sociology major is SOC 010. If you want to investigate this major further, you can also take SOC 254.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Are there any courses I am required or strongly encouraged to take in my first semester if I know I want to declare this major? Do any AP credits count for these requirements?<\/summary>\n

Introduction to Sociology (SOC 010). There are no AP exams for sociology courses.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

What is the latest semester that I can start this major and still graduate in four years?<\/summary>\n

At the latest, you could declare this major at the end of your Sophomore year. The major requires 11 courses, so we recommend that you take at least 2-3 sociology courses in your first three semesters, along with some CORE courses, and you will be on track. Please note that your methods class has to be taken before senior year.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

So many majors, minors and concentrations pair nicely with Sociology as it has a base footing in all other program focuses. Feel free to meet with us to discuss how any other program can pair with Sociology for your career needs.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

What else do you want incoming first year students to know about this major?<\/summary>\n

The study of social inequality is central to the Sociology major. The sociological lens acknowledges that race, gender, sexuality, and social class – as well as social dimensions such as the time period and geographic location – shape our destinies as much as our own personal efforts. You will be part of a vibrant learning community where you can both satisfy your intellectual curiosity and make a commitment to change our world for the better. Study broad social processes including global dynamics, social movements, immigration, and explore diverse institutions from the law and medicine to family and religion. Many transferable skills such as analytical, organizational, research, interpersonal, and communication are associated with the sociology degree. Sociology graduates are well equipped for careers in publishing, social work, policy analysis, nonprofit management, marketing, research, law, education, and more.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n
