What courses should I take in my first year to see if this is the right major for me?<\/summary>\n

Biology is a very broad discipline, ranging from molecules and cells to evolution and ecosystems. We recommend that students begin with Introductory Biology (BIOL 101) in their first semester. Depending on your interests, you may consider taking Introductory Chemistry (CHEM 101) or a course in environmental science.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Are there courses that I am required or strongly encouraged to take in my first semester if I know I want to declare this major? Do any AP credits count for these requirements?<\/summary>\n

BIOL 101 should be taken in the Fall. If you have AP credit from the AP Biology exam, it will be applied to BIOL 102 (offered in the Spring). By taking BIOL 101 in the Fall, you will have a chance to meet faculty and peers and to experience Biology at the college-level. You may take more advanced courses (e.g. Genetics or Evolution) in the spring of your first year, if you have AP credit for BIOL 102.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

What is the latest semester that I can start this major and still graduate in four years?<\/summary>\n

Sophomore year as the major requires 17 courses to be completed. If starting after your first year, please talk with a faculty member in Biology about your degree process.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

I am interested in many different subjects. What other majors, minors, or concentrations go well with this major?<\/summary>\n

Students majoring in Biology often minor in many different things including studio arts, creative writing, and health, science and society.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

What else do you want incoming first year students to know about this major?<\/summary>\n

Students with strong quantitative skills are encouraged to take BIOL 101 and CHEM 101 in their first semester.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n
