Workshop Material (and Assignments)
We will discuss two transcripts:
o A twenty-minute segment consisting of two stories of the same events told by Betty to the camera/film maker (Liane Brendon, 1972)
o A story shared by four 12-year-old boys around the campfire form the movie Stand By Me (Rob Reiner, 1982)
In the afternoon we will discuss material form our respective research projects:
n Teenagers narrative interactions
o Small stories – shared in discussion groups and everyday interactions
Please Read the transcripts of both stories and comment on the following questions:
(i) what is the sequence of events?
(ii) why is the speaker ordering these events in this way?
(iii) what is the theme of the story?
(iv) what is the relationship between the story, its sharing and the teller’s identity?
(v) reflect on how you came up with answers to questions (i-iv)?
(vi) does your reflection in (v) tell us anything about ‘narrative analysis’?
