Volunteer worker British Museum (N.H.) from 1910; Assist. 1921; Deputy Keeper, 1927; Keeper of Zoology, 1936-45; has made special study of living and fossil rodents and of the Pleistocene geology of Southern Britain; has given much attention to economic problems connected with whaling, rats and mice, vole plagues, and the musk rat in Great Britain and Western Europe; reported on Barrett-Hamilton researches on whales in South Georgia to the Colonial Office, 1915; collected an entire school of 127 whales of a rare species, the False Killer (Pseudorca crassidens) stranded in the Dornoch Firth, Oct. 1927; has studied many hoaxes including the Loch Ness Monster. Since 1945 devoted to mathematics and astro-navigation.
