Parent Orientation Program

Clark University Week One, Wednesday August 23, 2006

The Parent's Orientation Program offers an opportunity to select two out of these four sessions offered this afternoon. Each program will be offered twice – once at 2:15 p.m. and again at 3:30 p.m. Locations are noted on each session description.

Campus Safety - Jefferson Academic Center, Room 222

The Chief of University Police will describe the role UP plays on campus. The discussion will focus on the Residence Hall access system and how it works, the fire safety programming and the crime prevention team. The Chief and his officers welcome your questions and will provide ample opportunity for discussion.

Financial Aid - Jefferson Academic Center, Room 218

The Financial Aid Process is complete for this year - or is it?  During this workshop we will discuss what happens in the Financial Aid Office now that the student is enrolled. Also, a brief outline of what to expect in the future regarding financial aid information and useful resources on college financing options will be discussed.

Communication and Partnership: How You Can Help Us to Provide a Positive Clark Experience for Your Son/Daughter - Atwood Hall, Daniels Theater

So today you're having to ‘let go' a little bit…your daughter/son is moving into another important piece of her/his life…and will definitely still need you, but in changing ways. The Dean of Students, Associate Dean/Wellness Outreach Coordinator and Director of Residential Life and Housing will talk with you about some of the changes you might expect to encounter in your son or daughter. We'll also talk about the importance of your partnership and the parameters of communication with us.

Academic Support Services – Jefferson Academic Center, Room 320

The Associate Dean of the College, Director of the Writing Center and Writing Program, Director of Career Services, and the Associate Director of Career Services will offer this program to discuss the Academic Support Services.  With 29 majors, 25 minors, 11 concentrations, and the opportunity to design one's own major, Clark students have a myriad of degree options from which to choose.  How do they make that choice?  One major resource is the student's academic advisor.  This session will introduce you to some of Clark's academic services.  We'll begin with the academic advising program which pairs students with full-time faculty members from their first day on campus.  We examine how the Writing Center can assist students with their writing at all levels.  With an eye toward life after Clark, we'll explore the opportunities offered by Career Services and hear how the Clark Career Exploration Program can help students sort out career decisions.

Disability Services - Jefferson Academic Center, Room 133

In this session, parents of students with disabilities will have the opportunity to meet with Jane Daigneault, the Coordinator of Disability Services.  Jane will discuss academic accommodations that students may access and the process for doing this.  She will also discuss the academic the academic and personal support services available on campus to students.  As parents, you have been a major support for your sons and daughters throughout elementary and secondary school.  How will this role change now that your student is in college?
