Hike of Mt. WataticAshburnham, MASunday October 22nd, 2006 |
Back on October 5, 2002, twelve members of our newly resurrected Outing Club set off on the club's inaugural
outing - a hike of Mt. Watatic. Four years later, seven Outing Club members finally made it! The "related trips"
link below explains what became of that first Watatic outing; we'll tell you all about the second one.
A former ski area, the 1832 foot Mt. Watatic is now state-owned conservation land and is the second highest peak
in Massachusetts east of the Connecticut River. We hiked the Massachusets Midstate Trail to the mountain's summit,
passing between two giant boulders along the way. |
As we neared the summit we met Daisy, who posed for a photo op with Tim.
Arriving at the summit, Gabe takes in the view of Mt. Wachusett to our south.
The peaks of southern New Hampshire stood to our north.
Below us to the southeast were Ward Pond and Stodge Meadow Pond in Ashburnham.
This was our view to the east, with Greg in the foreground. Off in the distance, the City of Boston could be seen through the haze (about 50 miles away). |
Relaxing on the summit: Joe and Kate (left) and Tim and Hilary (right).
We all enjoyed being on top.
After leaving the summit, we hiked along the Wapack Trail across Nutting Hill and to the New Hampshire state line, where Gabe, Hilary,
Greg, Kate, Christina, Tim and Joe pause alongside the border marker.
Just in time for Halloween, we came across this seemingly haunted hollow tree as we continued down the trail.
A short distance later, Kate examines the remnants of another hollow but not-so-haunted tree. |
