CARIBBEAN AFRICAN CULTURAL
DAY (MARCH 20th 04)
The First Annual Caribbean
African Cultural Day was hosted by
the Caribbean African Students Association of Clark
University. The aim of the one-day celebration was
to bring together Clark students, professors, representatives
of the Consortium community as well as the wider Worcester
community to discuss issues specific to Africa and the
Caribbean in three main domains: culture, politics and the
wider community.
The event organized in conjunction with the African Support
Group of Clark University (affiliated to Graduate students at
Clark) was held on 20th, March 2004 and the
proceeds from the celebration benefited Mashingia High School
in Tanzania, Africa. The event showcased African and
Caribbean’s rich cultures, with an evening of cultural food
accompanied by a live band. Following the dinner was a
dance
party with music from the Caribbean and Africa.
DISCUSSIONS ON AFRICA/CARIBBEAN (March 20th 2004)
TOPIC I: DEMOCRACY IN HAITI (20/4/04)
This session was moderated by Prof. Beverly Grier,
International Relations and Government Dept. Clark University
and touched on the history of Haiti's path towards democracy
and the United States involvement in the process.
TOPIC II: BRAIN
DRAIN IN AFRICA (20/4/04)
This session was led by Kenton
Kayira, a PhD. Candidate at the Clark University's Geography
Dept. Discussion Title:-
Africa's ongoing development efforts will
continue to be undermined as long as the current phenomenon of
human capital flight, or 'brain drain' as it is commonly
known, continues.
Hosted Kids from Y.O.U Inc
children (21/28 Feb. 2004)
Y.O.U., Inc (Youth Opportunities Upheld, Inc). has over
thirty different programs serving the needs of troubled and/or
at-risk children, adolescents and families. They are organized
under five different program component categories, all of
which set the highest standards for excellence and results. On
February 21st and 28th, 2004 we hosted kids from Y.O.U inc at
Clark for 2 hours, played games and baked cookies. It was a
fun event.
Kwanzaa Celebrations: (6th
December 2004)
CASA Co-sponsored the Annual Kwanzaa Celebrations. This years
events featured Professor Vega as the main event speaker. With
entertainment from Clark Jazz Band and Counterpoints.
CASA Potluck Dinner: November, 16th,
Dana Commons:
On Sunday, November 16th,
we held our first CASA Sponsored Potluck Dinner at the Bethune
Multi-purpose resource room. Forty students gathered to enjoy
African and Caribbean cuisine and each others company. This
gathering also witnessed the birth of a new partnership
between the CASA Graduate and Undergraduate students. With the new collaboration, all
the delicious food, and the opportunity to meet new friends
from all over the world, the potluck was indeed a great
success.
Millennium conference 2003: October 31st - Nov. 2nd 2003:
Students had the opportunity to attend three workshops
that explored various themes that are important to becoming a
successful leader. Workshops included discussions on financial
strategies, entrepreneurship, politics, family unit and vision
