An Exhibition of Encaustic Paintings, Prints, and Sculptures

This exhibition of diverse artworks is united by the use of an extraordinary medium: encaustic. This fall, the Schiltkamp Gallery presents a collection of artists' works revitalizing this ancient material through contemporary painting, printmaking and sculpture. Luminous colors, translucent layers and tactile surfaces are the hallmarks of encaustic, a blend of beeswax, resin and pigment with an enormous range of applications and a fascinating history.

Encaustic, first utilized by the ancient Greeks to waterproof and then embellish the hulls of sailing vessels, was adopted by the Romans to adorn ceramics and sculpture, later still, Egyptians used it to paint funerary portraits entombed along the Nile River basin. Each creative innovation enriched the cross-cultural environment of Greco Roman Egypt. Today, the artists displaying their work in Kindred Spirits continue to employ encaustic in uniquely inventive ways, and as such, carry on a venerable tradition.
