Personal health is influenced not only by decisions we make ourselves, but by choices made by others — both individuals and institutions — that are often beyond our control and require balancing individual rights with the public good. Is it okay to smoke in a public place? Should HIV testing be mandatory for all adults? Should an industry be required to put scrubbers on smoke stacks to purify the air we breathe?
As a student in the public health concentration, you will develop an understanding of the factors that affect health in communities large and small, how this knowledge can be used to educate the public about healthy behaviors, and how policies — sometimes controversial — can be designed and implemented to protect health.
