Conserving Marine Mammals & Costal Ecosystems

This program is offered in both the spring and fall semesters.

Conserving Marine Mammals and Costal Ecosystems is offered through The School for Field Studies, focusing on green turtle population protection and water quality in Bahía Magdalena. Through inquiry and data gathering, students are able to understand the social, cultural, and economic significance of the green turtle. Spring participants will also devote some research time to the gray whale.

Because most local residents are dependent on marine resources, the research gathered is critical to the economic and social environment. In addition to this Directed Research, students will take Coastal Ecology, Principles of Resource Management, and Economic and Ethical Issues in Sustainable Development.

In addition, students can participate in the Puerto San Carlos Gray Whale and Sea Turtle Festivals, various Spanish lessons, folkloric dance classes, and short home stays.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to improve their conversational Spanish in order to better communicate with local residents.
