CET Jewish Studies in Prague

The curriculum for the Jewish Studies in Prague program was designed by leading U.S. scholars of Jewish History, the Holocaust, and Czech and Polish Studies. The multidisciplinary curriculum provides an opportunity to examine the history, culture, literature, and arts of Central and eastern European Jewry, while offering a context for exploring the non-Jewish history, politics, and society of the region.

The program is based at, and accredited by, Charles University, with facilities located throughout the city. Students attend courses at the CET center in the heart of Prague.

Students will take a Czech language course, two required core courses, and two electives. Students will also engage in several community service projects during the semester. All core and elective courses are taught in English; there is no language prerequisite. As part of the program, students will travel for nine days to Poland and Terezin, with additional excursions to Budapest, Hungary, and ?eský Krumlow.

The Czech educational system can seem very different to what students in the U.S. are used to, generally focusing on lectures and memorization. Students can expect a more relaxed atmosphere in a Czech classroom, but faculty often continue a discussion in less formal locations, such as restaurants or cafés.

Students are housed in apartments close to the city center and live with Czech flat-mates to help get accustomed to the local culture.
