Good Woman of Szechuan

In this play by the great German playwright Brecht, prostitute Shen Te struggles to lead a "good" life while trying to sustain her own values.

The score for this version of "Good Woman of Szechuan" is by the late Relly Raffman, professor of music at Clark from 1954 to 1988. Raffman held the Jeppson Chair in Music from its creation in 1966 until his death in 1988. He was also chair of the Music Program from 1954-1977 and chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department from 1972-1977.

 

Senior Danny Balel will star as Shen Te. The cast also includes Melanie Hardy (’08), Mary Townsend ('08), Hannah Salzman-Gubbay ('09), Daniel Derks ('09), Adam LeFebvre ('10), and Milo MacPhail ('10).

Rick Dildane, the producer of the Brown University/Trinity Rep New Plays Festival and Playwriting Coordinator for the MFA Playwriting program at Brown, will direct. Dildane holds an MFA in acting from Brown University/Trinity Rep Consortium and is a member of the Actors' Equity Association. He has participated in ten New Play Festivals that have contributed 30 new works to the American theater. He is also the Artistic Director of the Stephen Foster Theater, a 50-year-old summer theater in Kentucky. His directing/producing credits include "Big River," "The Sound of Music," "Tartuffe," "Smokey Joe's Cafe," "Grease," "The Misanthrope," "Annie," "The Civil War" and "Fuddy Meers," performed in 2007 at Clark.

 

Kallin Johnson, a part-time faculty member at Clark, is music director. Senior Kate Rafey ('08) is stage manager.
