IDCE Professor Kiran Asher releases new book

Kiran Asher, associate professor of International Development and Social Change, and Women's Studies published "Black and Green: Afro-Colombians, Development, and Nature in the Pacific Lowlands" (Duke University Press). New tenure-track faculty

Mark Davidson, assistant professor in the Graduate School of Geography, will begin at Clark in January 2010.  Davidson is an urban geographer whose research interests include gentrification, urban policy, metropolitan politics and social justice. He most recently served as a research fellow at the Urban Research Centre at the University of Western Sydney, Australia.

On Monday, March 16, the Clark student group Initial Advantage Inc., a non-profit entrepreneurial organization, held Clark Food Fest: Cook for Hunger in the dining hall. The event brought 940 students to the "café" that evening--200 more than usual--and collected 305 1bs. of food and $286 for the Worcester County Food Bank.

Fourth- through eighth-grade students representing 92 different towns and cities in Massachusetts will compete in the state final of the National Geographic Bee beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 3, in the Jefferson Academic Center at Clark University. Clark University will play host to "Marx in Soho," a play written by "A People's History of the United States" author Howard Zinn, in two performances, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, in Tilton Hall of the Higgins University Center, 950 Main Street.

Clark alumni to hold discussions on race, radicalism and civil rights from the '60s to the Obama Era

The Honorable D'Army Bailey, Clark class of '65, will hold a lecture to discuss his forthcoming book "The Education of a Black Radical, a Southern Civil Rights Activist's Journey, 1959–1964," as part of Clark University's Difficult Dialogues Spring 2009 Symposium "Where Do We Go from Here? Race in the Era of Obama."

Clark Presents 'bound,' a Collaborative Art Exhibit by Cherbuliez, Suzuki, White

The Visual and Performing Arts Department at Clark University will present "bound," an exhibit combining the works of sculptor Diana Cherbuliez, painter Naoe Suzuki and charcoal artist Marguerite White. The exhibit will run from Feb. 11 to April 10 in the Schiltkamp Gallery of the Traina Center for the Arts, 92 Downing St. An artists' discussion, followed by an opening reception, will begin at 4:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 11. The artists invite viewers to linger, explore and ultimately respond to their works.

President Bassett speaks at 'Making a Difference' forum

As keynote speaker at the sixth annual Jobs for the Future (JFF) "Making a Difference" breakfast on January 15 in Boston, Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray marked the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. by highlighting education and workforce reforms. He marked how these reforms have helped more African-Americans and others in Massachusetts become educated and gainfully employed in the past 25 years. He also urged more than 100 leaders in government, education, philanthropy, business, and communities to build on these successes.

Between Barack and a Hard Place - Prominent anti-racist writer, activist to speak at Clark

Tim Wise, well known author on racism and prominent anti-racist activist, will present a lecture titled, "Between Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the age of Obama," on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Daniels Theater, Atwood Hall at Clark University. The event is free and open to the public.
