Hiatt Center recognized
for contributions in teacher education
Worcester, Mass. - Clark University's Jacob Hiatt Center for Urban Education was recently recognized with the 2007 Richard Wisniewski Award from the Society of Professors of Education. The award is given to an institution that has made "singularly significant contributions to the theory and practice of teacher education." The award was announced at a business meeting of the Society during the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association.
The Hiatt Center was selected for the award by the Society's awards committee. Two distinguished past recipients include the Institute for Educational Inquiry (Seattle, Washington) and the Southern Maine Partnership (University of Southern Maine).
The award has been given out annually since 2000. It is named for Richard Wisniewski, past president of the Society. Wisniewski also served as past president of AACTE (American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education) and former dean of the College of Education at the University of Tennessee.
The Jacob Hiatt Center for Urban Education aims to develop exemplary models of urban schooling, teaching and teacher education through local partnership, in order to learn from these models and expand the knowledge-base of effective practice through research. This mission honors Jacob Hiatt's hope in endowing the Center in 1991, which was to enhance educational opportunity and achievement among the increasingly diverse students in the city of Worcester. All of the Center's teacher education programs are conducted with partner schools in the Main South area of Worcester.
The Society of Professors of Education (SPE), previously called the Society of College Teachers of Education, was founded in 1902. The SPE is a professional and academic association for all persons engaged in teacher preparation or related activities. Its purpose is to serve the diverse needs and interests of the education professoriate. An interdisciplinary organization, the Society's primary goal is to provide a forum for consideration of major issues, tasks, problems and challenges confronting professional educators.
