President's Office

Thank You from University Advancement

This has been a tremendous year, thanks to your generous support as engaged alumni, interested parents and loyal friends of Clark. Your continued investment of time and resources, financial and other, has moved us forward on many fronts. During the past 12 months we have launched an innovative alumni program, created new giving societies, dedicated a state-of-the-art bioscience center, received sev eral prestigious national awards, set a new record for donors to the Clark Fund and celebrated the 100th anniversary of formal Commencement exercises, among other developments on and off campus. Here are a few highlights:

The Clark Fund, which exceeded its $2.2 million goal, attracted a record number of total donors during the past fiscal year. The 8,369 alumni, parents, friends, corporations and foundations that made gifts included 5,870 alumni and a record 1,926 parents. We are deeply grateful to all who supported the Clark Fund during fiscal 2004-2005. Your gifts are an investment in our daily enterprise and in financial aid for deserving students.

Alumni Affairs launched the Alumni-in-Residence program last fall. Nearly two dozen alumni returned to campus in November for our first-ever Alumni-in-Residence Day. The new program encourages alumni to contribute to the intellectual life of the University. It also enables students and faculty to benefit from the experience and expertise our alumni have gained since graduation. We invited alumni from a broad range of professions to spend the day on campus, attending classes, meeting with student groups and participating in panel discussions. Participants told us it was a terrific experience.

The opening of the Cathy ’83 and Marc ’81 Lasry Center for Bioscience has been the most visible of exciting developments at Clark during the past year. In April, we recognized the building’s namesake, Cathy Cohen ’83 and Marc ’81 Lasry for their extraordinarily generous lead gift when we dedicated the 50,000-square-foot environmentally responsible facility. The Lasry Center includes the magnificent three-story Alden Atrium, as well as many named spaces among its teaching laboratories, faculty research laboratories, faculty offices, classrooms and seminar rooms.

Building on that momentum, the Kresge Foundation awarded Clark a Science Initiative grant of $205,920. It is our first Kresge Foundation grant since 1990. Half of this generous grant has been applied toward the purchase of scientific instruments; the other half will establish an endowment fund to maintain and eventually replace these instruments once Clark has met the challenge conditions of raising $400,000 for this purpose by May 1, 2006.

We could not accomplish all that we do without your much-appreciated help. Again, on behalf of the students, faculty and administration at Clark, thank you for supporting the University so generously, helping to increase access for deserving students, and helping to leverage our impact on the world through your gifts, encouragement and many volunteer hours. On a personal note, I would like to thank you for seven great years. By the time you get this report, I will have left Clark University for a new position at Berklee College of Music. While I am excited about this new endeavor, it is bittersweet. I will miss the Clark family dearly. But I leave assured that my successor will be in good hands, as I know I can count on you to continue to support the University enthusiastically and generously.

Once again, we are publishing the donor lists on Clark’s Web site. The paper and ink saved in taking this approach is much more environmentally responsible and aligned with the values of the University and our alumni and friends. Publishing these lists on Clark’s Web site is also a cost-saving measure for the University. We hope you will continue to support our decision, which will help ensure that the University’s resources are being used exactly where they should be—on Clark students, faculty and programs.
