The Clark Endowment on May 31, 2005 was valued at $204.2 million, as compared to last year’s level of $186.3 million. The great majority of these funds have been provided to the University over its 118-year history by generous alumni and other supporters who have chosen to benefit Clark and its students in perpetuity. These donors have asked that their original gifts be invested, and that the annual income thereon be used to support the intended programs, primarily scholarships, fellowships and faculty chairs. The University’s total invested funds have grown in recent years, due both to investment performance and charitable contributions from generous Clark alumni and friends.

Attiat F. Ott Fund for Economics Established to Honor Influential Economist
Economics professor and director of the Institute for Economic Studies, Attiat Ott concluded her Clark University teaching career this year. Economics professor and chair of the department Maurice Weinrobe noted that her departure from the classroom signifies an important change in the life of this department, although not in its commitment to the educational development of its students.
An influent ial and accomplished economist, Ott was well known for her passionate interest in supporting Clark students' pursuit of their ambitions. She had chaired the dissertations of 55 graduate students who earned Ph.Ds during the 36 years she taught at Clark. “There are few students who have passed through our graduate program who have not been affected by Attiat's teaching and mentoring. She has never suffered casual interest in intellectual pursuits, particularly in the areas of macroeconomics or public finance, and she has simulated a love for learning among many,” says Weinrobe.
It's befitting then that alumni and friends would honor her through establishing the Attiat F. Ott Fund for Economics. Gladstone A. Hutchinson, dean of studies at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, chaired the effort to raise the funds, which will support academic-excellence initiatives and innovation in her name. "She is my life mentor," explains Hutchinson, who earned a doctorate under Ott.
The first contributions were used to name the department's seminar room in Jonas Clark Hall the Attiat F. Ott Seminar Room, which was renovated as a combination smart classroom, reception area and gathering place for students and faculty. Additional contributions will fund an annual speakers series and active-learning grants for internships and fellowships that provide Clark economics students opportunities to increase their exposure to cutting-edge scholarship and research and apply economic theory in real-world settings.
