The Clark University Endowment

The Clark Endowment on May 31, 2005 was valued at $204.2 million, as compared to last year’s level of $186.3 million. The great majority of these funds have been provided to the University over its 118-year history by generous alumni and other supporters who have chosen to benefit Clark and its students in perpetuity. These donors have asked that their original gifts be invested, and that the annual income thereon be used to support the intended programs, primarily scholarships, fellowships and faculty chairs. The University’s total invested funds have grown in recent years, due both to investment performance and charitable contributions from generous Clark alumni and friends.

Kyei Atupem '82 International Endowed Internship Fund

This past year, A. Kyei Atupem '82 pledged $25,000 to establish the first endowed internship fund for Clark's Global Scholars Program. The A. Kyei Atupem '82 International Endowed Internship Fund in Memory of Gary S. Poor will provide undergraduate scholarships in the Global Scholars Program for a student of high academic achievement attending Clark from Ghana, Africa. Although the annual award is intended specifically for a Global Scholar from Ghana, if none apply, a student from elsewhere in Africa can be considered.

The Global Scholars Program is a unique program for incoming international stu dents who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their home communities and a commitment to making the world a better place. Participants in this program receive a $48,000 scholarship over four years, as well as a stipend for a paid internship or research assistantship. Established last year, the Global Scholars Program builds on Clark's longstanding commitment to providing a challenging education with a global focus. Eight first-year international students were selected from the class of 2008 to take part in this program. This fall, Clark welcomed nine first-year international students as Global Scholars.

Atupem established the endowed internship fund to honor the memory of Gary S. Poor, a former admissions director at Clark who became his mentor and good friend. “Mr. Poor was instrumental in providing me with the support and mentorship I desperately needed during my undergraduate years at Clark. His commitment went beyond Clark,” says Atupem, explaining how P oor continued to give him guidance and advice even after graduation and helped him transition to starting a new life in America. Atupem and Poor became good friends and stayed in touch until Poor's passing.

“This endowment is a humble reminder that Mr. Poor's spirit still lives,” says Atupem.
