President's Report 2005

Message from the President

A Message from the President Over the past five years Clark has significantly improved the quality of incoming students, notably enhanced its physical facilities, recruited three dozen excellent new faculty members, and achieved greater national visibility than it has had for years. The University has made these leaps to a great extent because of your support.

Taking Clark Forward now to a new level is possible because of those advances. Our mission still remains the education of undergraduate and graduate students and the development of new knowledge to make our world a better place. But now our goal is to make those signatures special to Clark—“Learn through Inquiry,” “Make a Difference,” “Experience Diverse Cultures”—part of every student’s education and widely recognized parts of what education and research at C lark University means.

Active inquiry-based learning may take place between a student and professor in the lab or between a student and mentor in a project away from campus. Experiencing diverse cultures means gaining a global perspective on issues, studying next to students from all parts of the world, and having projects and classes abroad. Making a difference in one’s world may involve engagement in the Worcester community or helping to build a sustainable economy in an underdeveloped region of the world.

Clark is making investments in academic programs, in the quality of student life and activities, in our crucial alumni networks, and in telling our story to others. Thank you for all you have done to bring your University so far. I invite you to partner with me and other friends and alumni of Clark as we make the experience of students and faculty here even better in the near future.

A Clark education is topnotch. Yet we’re striving to make it even better.

Clark’s mission remains the same. Its priority to educate undergraduate and graduate students to be imaginative, contributing citizens of the world, and to advance the frontiers of knowledge and understanding through rigorous scholarship and creative effort is still true and even more relevant in this complicated, ever-changing world. But today there is a renewed energy backing the vitality of this mission. Clark is strengthening its commitment to deliver a distinctive, premier educational experience to its students.

Positively, where Clark is today has much to do with the accomplishments and strategic directions of the past five years. New strategies and action steps are accelerating that forward momentum, helping Clark achieve more rapid progress in improving both its academic reputation and the Clark experience.

This report not only highlights where Clark has been this past year—it also portrays a vision of where Clark is headed. It’s about taking Clark forward.
