Celebrating a new president

The installation ceremony began with the academic procession of Clark faculty and approximately 125 delegates representing colleges and universities from across the country. The procession was followed by remarks from Provost Frederick Greenaway and Worcester City Manager Thomas Hoover, who officially welcomed the Bassetts to the Worcester community.

Lawrence Krauss, the Ambrose Swasey Professor of Physics, professor of astronomy and chair of the Physics Department at Case Western Reserve University, delivered the keynote address, "In Praise of Nonsense." Krauss is an internationally known theoretical physicist with wide research interests.

Ronald Shaich '76, chair of the Clark University Board of Trustees, performed the ceremony of investiture, in which Bassett was charged with his responsibilities to the trustees, faculty, alumni and students. Shaich was assisted by: Robert Ross, sociology professor and Clark faculty chair; Lawrence Hershoff '71, Alumni Association president; and Fabiola Cordova '01. Agnar Pytte, president emeritus of Case Western Reserve University where Bassett was most recently dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, then introduced Bassett as the University's new president.

The ceremony also included music performances by the Clark University Brass Quartet, Concert Choir and Chamber Chorus and Concert Band. Reverend Catherine Reed, associate pastor at the John Street Baptist Church and member of the Clark Campus Ministry, and Reverend Monsignor Francis Scollen, pastor of the Church of St. Peter, delivered the invocation and benediction. The Clark Jazz Combo provided music for the reception following the ceremony.
