Data Backup

Now is the Time to Backup Your Data

Don't be caught off guard, just do it!

Imagine this:

It’s the end of the semester. You’ve had such a full course load that you let a paper or two slip and now you’re playing catch-up. You’re working late into the night and turn and look at your clock and its 2 am. You call it quits for the night and leave everything running on your computer. While you sleep, a windows update starts to download and installs on your computer.

The update breaks your computer unbeknownst to you. You wake, and start to work. Something is not right with the computer so you decide to restart it. As you wait eagerly for the system to restart, you’re highly irritated that the system startup status bar keeps rolling and rolling. You have a sickening feeling as you watch a blue screen pop-up. Not only is this last minute paper on the computer but also,
ALL YOUR WORK!

Unfortunately, these problems happen all the time and what separates a stressful short term event into a highly stressful long term event is just taking the time to perform a data backup.

Here are a few tips to keep you sane in the information age:

  • Buy an external hard drive and backup all your data to it as often as possible.
  • When working on an attached document in an email, always save it first, to a location you determine, then edit it.
  • Setup a second profile on your computer and use that second profile to surf the net, play games, etc. This may save you if you get a virus since it may only affect your current login profile.
  • Have a disaster recovery plan. Create recovery disks and put them in a safe spot to limit your down time. Most new machines have a recovery partition on the computer but create recovery disks as a backup.
  • Create email backups using Outlook PST files and put those on the external hard drive too.
  • Save files to your Clark network share, which you can access from anywhere you have network access.
