October 25th, 2006 - Campus Sustainability Day
Wednesday, October 25th at 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. Tilton Hall, Higgins University
Center
Campus Sustainability Day celebrates sustainability in higher education. On
this designated day, colleges and universities are encouraged to create events
on campus for the exchange of ideas and knowledge among faculty, staff, and
students - from all departments and disciplines - and even from across the
“edge” of campus.
This is the first year that Clark will host Campus Sustainability Day.
Students and local organizations will showcase projects aimed at making our
campus and the surrounding community more environmentally sustainable. Visit
their info tables to learn how campus operations and even your daily activities
impact local ecologies as well as global climate change.
At 12:30, we will highlight the student purchase of Renewable Energy Credits
– an arrangement that matches their electricity consumption with the production
of renewable energy - and present a check to the Massachusetts Energy Consumers
Alliance for deposit into the New England Wind Fund. The Massachusetts
Technology Collaborative is double matching Clark’s contribution and will award
one grant to the City of Worcester and another to the state for clean energy
projects. These ceremonies will be followed by a musical performance by Zac
Galen and Other Men without Class.
The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
October 17th, 2006 - Choose Renewable Energy Program!
The Choose Renewable Energy Program allows you to match your electricity consumption with
clean, renewable
energy by paying a
$30 premium for the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). The premium
represents the estimated cost of purchasing enough RECs to cover the average
electricity usage of a Clark student in campus housing during the academic year.
(Thanks for signing up! - 10/27/2006)
March 24th, 2006 - Tabling Session
This event will run from 11am-1pm as well as from 5pm-7pm and is sponsored by Clark Composting & Recycling (CCR)
as well as the Recycling Center. We are looking to publicize recycling on campus and educate students on it. In
addition, we are giving away free stuff that has been found at the Recycling Center like old magazines, paper,
envelopes, hangers, etc. CCR and the Recycling Center are looking for volunteers and we hope that whoever stops by will
sign up as part of our interest list and actively support our causes. Attendees can also take advantage of this event to
sign up as volunteers to help collect materials for next year's Dump & Run.
August 8, 2005 - Get ready for the third annual Dump & Run Reuse/Recycle Sale!
Need great stuff at bargain prices? The third annual Dump & Run sale is scheduled for Saturday, August 27, from 9am-2:30pm on the Charlotte Street field (at the corner of Charlotte and Woodland Streets, the same location as last year). The sale is open to the public. This year's inventory includes furniture, clothing, lamps, fans, rugs, bathroom & kitchen items, books, household items, toys & games, and much more! We're also scheduled to receive a donation of three light-tables this week, each of which has a hinged tabletop that can be raised to create a drafting table!
As in previous years, net proceeds benefit those volunteer groups who have donated labor to help collect items and organize the sale. This year's beneficiaries include a variety of Clark student organizations as well as Service For Peace (Worcester). Individual and group volunteer opportunities are still available -
contact us!
Rain date: Saturday, September 10, same time and location.
April 21, 2005 - Clark's first ever Trash Audit scheduled!
Does more of Clark's trash deserve a second chance... by being recycled?
On Monday, April 25, in honor of Earth Day, Clark's first ever Trash Audit will be performed from 12:30pm-3pm in front of Atwood Hall. The purposes of the Trash Audit are to: a) provide a snapshot of our solid waste composition in terms of general types and quantities; b) help determine what percentage of our trash could actually be recycled instead of thrown away; and c) generate increased awareness on campus of our overall waste generation.
Bags of trash will be selected randomly from each of three to four dumpsters around campus to create what we hope will be a representative sample of Clark's waste. Each bag will be weighed and sorted into a variety of categories of recyclable and non-recyclable materials. All members of the Clark community are invited to stop by for a learning experience you won't soon forget!
Interested in helping? Just stop by! Rubber gloves will be provided, just bring your own enthusiasm!
April 18, 2005 - RecycleMania winners announced!
The RecycleMania competition came to a close on April 9, with defending champion Miami University triumphing in the Per Capita Classic after an intense battle. Clark's final placement was 32nd of 34 colleges. In the Recycling Rate Competition, California State (San Marcos) dominated by consistently posting a 40+ percent recycling rate. Clark's overall recycling rate of 11.07% was good for last place. For full results, visit the RecycleMania webpage.
April 15, 2005 - Energy competition heats up!
Two weeks from the end of Reduce Your Juice!, the race is heating up! In residence halls, Bullock Hall leads the pack with a 23.773% reduction over the past two months, but Dana Hall is nipping at their heels! Johnson, Sanford, and Wright Halls are all slightly behind but within 2% of each other... could one of these three break from the pack and overtake Bullock for the win?
In the houses, 70 Florence leads with a commanding reduction of 20.780%. Can 83½ Florence, currently at 14.555% reduction, close the gap? Will neighboring 87, 85, and 83 Florence take notice and reduce any energy during the contest? Will 112 Woodland look across the driveway and learn a thing or two about energy reduction from neighboring 114 Woodland? Stay tuned to see who gets a pizza party this spring! Final results to be posted in early May.
February 1, 2005 - Reduce Your Juice!
Clark's new energy conservation program for residence halls/houses is underway! Conserve energy from February 1 through April 30 for the chance to win a pizza party or ice cream social for your hall or house! To determine the winning hall and house, energy use for February '05, March '05, and April '05 in each hall and house is compared to the amount of energy used in that building during February '04, March '04, and April '04. If the energy used in '05 is less than what was used in '04, you've reduced your energy use! The hall and house with the greatest average reduction over the course of the three months, wins!
December 3, 2004 - Clark joins RecycleMania!
For the first time ever, Clark has registered for the national intercollegiate recycling competition RecycleMania! Colleges and universities across the country compete for ten weeks during spring semester to see who can recycle the most materials per student in residence halls & houses, and dining halls. This year's competition includes Brown University, Carnegie Mellon University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, MIT, Ohio University, UMass Amherst, and University of Vermont. Watch for more information around campus during spring semester, and GO CLARK!

The sale inventory includes bureaus, couches, desks, clothing, kitchenware, books, office supplies, and much much more!
June 28, 2004 - Dump & Run sale a success!
Clark's second annual Dump & Run Reuse/Recycle sale was held on Saturday, June 26 on the back lawn of Harrington House. Despite poor weather, the sale grossed more than $3,000 and is estimated to have diverted more than four tons of reusable items from the trash! The net proceeds of the sale will be split proportionately between volunteer groups that helped to collect, sort, and sell the merchandise. This year, Dismas House of Central Massachusetts, Science Fiction People of Clark, and the Clark Sustainability Initiative will receive proceeds. The following groups also received merchandise donations: Friends of Goddard Library (books), Red Cross (clothing), and the Lutheran Social Services Refugee Program (desks, beds, and bureaus).
