Eligibility
- African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American
- US citizen / permanent resident / national
- cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale
- will enter an accredited college or university as full-time, degree-seeking freshmen in the fall of 2002
- has a significant financial need (i.e., meet the federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria)
- has demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities.

Description
The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education, in all discipline areas and a graduate education for those students pursuing studies in mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science. The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for thousands of outstanding students with significant financial need to reach their fullest potential.

Award
Individuals selected as Gates Millennium Scholars will receive funds in an amount to be allocated by GMS on the basis of financial need. The award will be based on the cost of tuition, fees, books, and living expenses for the 2002-2003 academic year, as well as the availability of grants and other scholarships reported on the submitted financial aid award letter. Gates Millennium Scholarship awards will be offered to 2002-2003 Scholars who qualify in succeeding years of full-time undergraduate study as well as graduate study in mathematics, science, engineering, education, and library science.
