USGA Foundation Fellowship is a full-time, 2-3 year paid fellowship position for recent graduates that focuses on fellows' acquisition of managerial experience in managing the Foundation's grant programs.
Description
The USGA Fellowship in Leadership and Service connects college graduates at the outset of their careers with resources that enable them to grow personally and professionally.
The Fellowship provides an educational component for recent college graduates to aid in their professional and personal development. At the same time, Fellows operate in a challenging environment with a high level of responsibility. This affords them the opportunity to learn through experience while examining their professional aspirations and strategies.
The Fellowship’s educational component focuses on non-profit management, finance, public speaking, writing skills, negotiations, self-awareness and leadership.
The Fellows’ work experience is centered on supporting grant recipients in all phases of their operation: from offering resources on how to start a successful program, to walking them through the application process, to working with them on sound planning and budgeting. Other means of support include planning media events, writing press releases, providing equipment contacts, facilitating connections with volunteers and visiting programs on-site. On average, Fellows visit more than 200 programs per year.
The Fellowship is a two-year commitment with an opportunity to create a third-year project. This project must be aimed at furthering one’s development as well as serving the mission of the USGA. During the course of this possible three-year tenure, Fellows are presented with three distinct management opportunities. In the first year, Fellows are mentored by peers; in the second year, Fellows become mentors; and, in the third year, Fellows frequently have the autonomy to work even more independently. This process is overseen by the permanent Foundation staff.
Fellows also work at the 13 national championships, conducted by the USGA, and represent the USGA at meetings and events across the country. By placing Fellows in positions of leadership, they are able to learn through hands-on experience.
USGA Fellows represent a variety of professional aspirations and career and educational backgrounds. Additionally, they enter the program with varying levels of familiarity with the game of golf; some as collegiate players and others as true beginners. The common bond shared by all, however, is the desire to develop leadership skills, gain experience in the non-profit sector, enhance others’ lives through the game of golf and work to protect the game’s best interests.
By working with the Grants Committee and Foundation Staff, Fellows are empowered to create and implement new initiatives, refine the tools already in place and continuously enhance the scope of services provided by the USGA, all "For the Good of the Game."
