Advising Tip for Prospective Majors

Q. What courses should be taken during the first year?

As the Academic Catalog indicates, Management majors have eight requirements that should be completed during the first and second years. It is helpful if students complete some of these foundation courses during the first year. Typically, a first year Management major might take ECON 010, ECON 160, MATH 113, 119 or 120, and one of the introductory MGMT courses. Some Management majors may wish to immediately load up on MGMT courses, but it is often better for them to wait until the second year. Appropriate MGMT courses for the first year might be MGMT 100 (The Art and Science of Management), MGMT 101 (Principles of Accounting), or MGMT 104 (Introduction to Management Information Systems).

Q. Should Management majors explore the PLS during their first year, or should they focus more on the prerequisites for the major?

A few MGMT course requirements fulfill the PLS requirements (e.g., ECON 010-GP; MGMT 104-FA; MGMT 262-VP). For those PLS perspectives not covered by the required courses for the major, the first and second years are ideal periods to explore the PLS, particularly since most required MGMT courses, including MGMT electives, are restricted to juniors and seniors.

Q. What are the guidelines for internships and/or directed readings for Management majors?

Many Management students take part in an education enhancing internship and can receive credit for their work. MGMT majors need to complete the internship procedures as directed by the Office of Career Services. In addition, Management majors need to get their internships and directed readings cleared by the GSOM Program Administrator, Laura Burgess. Students must also find a Management faculty member to oversee their internships/directed readings, if done for credit.

Management internships are limited to one course credit per internship and two internships during a student's undergraduate career. If a student wishes to complete a third internship for academic credit, the student may petition the GSOM Program Manager by submitting a letter from him/herself and a sponsoring faculty member for approval.

Q. If key introductory courses are filled, are there good alternatives?

Unfortunately, there are no alternatives to the required courses in the Management major. If key courses are filled, students will simply have to wait until the next semester or the following year.

Q. How and when does GSOM assign advisors for declared majors?

If students do not request a particular advisor, advisor assignments are made by the Program Manager at the time they declare their major. All students who declare the Management major will have a Management faculty advisor assign to them.

Q. Is there a preferred sequence of courses students should follow?

During the first two years, there is no preferred sequencing of courses students need to follow. However, ECON 010, ECON 160 or PSYC 105, MATH 113, 119, or 120, and MGMT 100 and MGMT 101 are prerequisites for courses students should take in their Junior year. Students are advised to complete these courses by the end of their sophomore year.

It is important that students take the following courses in their Junior year, or the fall semester of their Senior year, since they are prerequisites for Applying the Art & Science of Management (MGMT 260), a Senior year capstone course taken in the spring of a student's senior year.  These courses are MGMT 210*, MGMT 230, MGMT 240, and MGMT 250. MGMT 210 is only offered in the fall semester.

MGMT 260 and MGMT 262, required courses for the major are only offered in the spring.  If students are anticipating a December graduation date, they need to make sure they take these courses during their final spring semester

*Students planning on doing the Accelerated MBA program should consult their advisor before taking MGMT 210. These students are advised to take this course in the fall semester of their senior year, instead of the fall semester of their junior year.

Q. What are the guidelines for students wishing to pursue the fifth year MBA option?

Students from any major can purse the accelerated MBA degree. Students who are interested in pursuing the accelerated MBA are encouraged to consider a minor in Management since there are undergraduate MGMT courses that can provide waivers for graduate courses. Consequently, completion of those undergraduate courses will reduce the number of required courses in the MBA program and facilitate the completion of the degree during the fifth year.

Academic diversity is supported in the MBA program, and students are encouraged to major in a field that interests them the most at the undergraduate level.

All students who plan on applying to the accelerated MBA program must complete two prerequisite courses by the end of their junior year with a grade of B- or higher. These courses are ECON 010 and MATH 113, 119, or 120

Additional information is available in the Clark University catalog and on the Graduate School’s Admissions’ site. Students intending to participate in the fifth year MBA program should discuss their plan of study with the GSOM Program Manager as early as their first year at Clark.

Q. What undergraduate majors complement a minor in Management, particularly for students wishing to pursue the accelerated MBA option?

Liberal arts majors at Clark have the opportunity to minor in a strong Management program that they can tailor to fit their needs and interests. Our Management minor provides a solid business introduction to liberal arts majors who intend to pursue a career in business or are simply interested in learning more about the field.  Students in any major at Clark can both minor in Management and purse the accelerated MBA.

Q. What are the guidelines for students wishing to pursue the accelerated MSF option?

Because the MSF program is highly structured and requires multiple prerequisites, students must consider the BA/MSF option as early in their undergraduate careers as possible. The MSF degree is a specialized degree and students should explore career options in the field of finance through undergraduate internships and career research prior to applying to the program. Although not required, students interested in the MSF degree are encouraged to consider a major of minor in Economics, Management, or Mathematics. Students from any major can apply to the accelerated MSF program.

All students interested in the accelerated MSF program must complete the following program prerequisite courses with a grade of B-or higher during their first three years at Clark:

ECON 160 (Introduction to Statistical Analysis) or PSYC 105 (Quantitative Methods), or comparable statistics course

ECON 010 (Economics: A Comparative Approach)

MATH 120 (Calculus I)

MGMT 101 (Principles of Accounting)

MGMT 240 (Corporate Finance)
