Academic Advising

Communication and Culture

Advising Tips for Prospective Majors

  1. The focus of this major is on the cultural study of communication, not on professional preparation.

  2. Students should be aware that the requirements for the major are under revision, and a new structure will most likely be in place at the time they declare the major.

  3. The current catalog provides a good orientation to the focus of the major and to the cross-listed courses.

  4. The foundation course for the major is COMM 101:  Communication and Culture.  There are a few spaces available for entering first year students, and the course will be offered again in the spring semester.

  5. Courses with openings as of August that will provide a good perspective for entering students on what is meant by the cultural study of communication are:
  • COMM 160:  Global Cultures and Identities (cross-listed with Sociology)
  • COMM 165:  The Arts of Islam (cross-listed with Art History)
