Events

Children As Sexual Beings (Wed, Dec 3) [−]
7:00 PM-8:30 PM, Clark University: Sackler Sciences Center, S121, 950 Main Street, Worcester, MA (Clark University Only)
It is important to regard children as being sexual from birth to death. Lying to children and / or censoring their knowledge and perceptions of sex and sexuality can cause trauma and confusion that will ultimately prevent them from leading healthy lives. Providing children with guidelines for sexual behavior and some primitive conceptual ggrasp of sexuality can better prepare them for the sexual experience that they will undoubtedly encounter. Sponsored by: Philosophy Club.

7:00 PM-8:30 PM, Clark University: Sackler Sciences Center, S120, 950 Main Street, Worcester, MA (Clark University Only)
Do educational institutions use empirical knowledge to train decision makers who will be the best informed members of society and who will use their degrees to the best of their ability? Or do educational institutions serve more as a costly litmus test for entry into an elite based on willingness to comply with baseless tradition? Can uneducated people be trusted to make good decisions? Can educated people be trusted to make good decisions? Is it impossible to learn outside of an institutional setting? Should knowledge cost money? Why do we go to universities and colleges? Sponsored by: Philosophy Club.

The Environmental Science Program will hold a student-ES faculty social at 4:00 - 5:30pm, Thursday 4 December, in the Lasry BioScience atrium. The purpose of the social is two-fold. First, it is our first opportunity for all the environmental science students and faculty to get together. We have a number of fairly new faculty in the program, and of course a whole year-class of new students. Second, we have a theme for the social -- "Land conservation and Conservation in Massachusetts". Four guests, representing two regulatory and two non-government organizations, will be present to briefly address the students and to chat with them: the Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program (NHESP), the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Trustees of Reservations (TTOR), and the North Quabbin Land Trust (NQLT). These are the kinds of people students in the environmental sciences should meet! Although this is nominally a social for ES majors and faculty, we welcome all Clark University students. Want to see your professor covered in frosting? Want to relax before the whirlwind of finals? ...and who doesn't love building a good gingerbread house? *In this annual event we plan to strengthen the bond between professors and students in their academic departments through a gingerbread house competition. The winning department will be crowned "Clark's Gingerbread House Champion" and can keep the trophy until the next competition. *Academic departments will form teams of students and professors to compete in a gingerbread house competition against other academic departments. The teams will be made up of 6 people max and departments may have more than one team. Every team will be provided with the same amount of gingerbread and basic traditional toppings (additional toppings can be brought to the event by the teams). Building will last for one hour and fifteen minutes, after that time a panel of judges will crown the overall winner. Other categories will be awarded as well, i.e. student's choice, best use of candy, etc. The departments are encouraged to put their own academic twist on their gingerbread houses. Not into forming a team? Come support your friends, judge for student's choice, and play in the "gingerbread playground" where students can come to decorate and design their own gingerbread men. Sign-up your team at http://tinyurl.com/gingerbread08! Sponsored by: Initial Advantage.
