I
My research is guided by the following questions. What are the historical, cultural, and social underpinnings at various spatio-temporal scales that influence economic processes? How is economic rationality shaped and nurtured differently across societies? And consequently, how do societies differ in the manner they engage in capitalism? My work employs a comparative approach to illustrate the dynamics and transformations of global production and consumption with empirical evidence from the Asia-Pacific region, especially Japan. A comparative approach seeks to understand the variety of social mechanisms through which economic processes are interpreted and justified. Taking Japan as a counter-example to the Anglo-American model of capitalism, my work highlights the complexities and the inadequacies of conceptualizing capitalism as monolithic and its outcomes universal. My comparative work on internet and wireless commerce. as well as research on Japan's video game industry demonstrates how the societies and their institutions conceptualize, shape, and exercise capitalism distinctively.
Current Research:
Technology Firms in the Global Economy • Locational dynamics of Japanese MNEs (Asia-Pacific, Western Europe) • IT entrepreneurship and regional legacy (Japan) • IT entrepreneurship and technological upgrading (India, US)
• E- and M-commerce (Japan, US, Germany) • Retail TNCs and competition among various retail formats (Japan, US, Germany)
Cultural Economies • The video game industry and its evolution, the role of creative talent and technologies (Japan, US, UK) • Consumption, Consumers, and User-led Innovation
Backbones of Global Trade – Distribution and Logistics • Trust and transactions in the logistics industry (US) • Simulating industrial organization of the Logistics industry (US)
