Landscape
ecology studies landscape patterns, the interactions among patches
within a landscape mosaic, and how these patterns and interactions
change over time. The concept is increasingly being used to study
complex landscape patterns and ecological functions emerging from
the impacts of human activities on natural resources. Improvements
in the collection and processing of landscape-based data on the
African continent together with recent inauguration of the African
Union presents a unique opportunity for collaboration among researchers
and resource managers who are interested in mitigating degradation
of resources that are common to different countries. However,
most environmental research and development projects have involved
bilateral collaborations between researchers and resource managers
in various African countries and their counterparts in developed
countries. Therefore, there is the need to bring together all
those interested in resource and environmental issues in African
countries in a forum that focuses on landscape perspectives of
environmental management in Africa. Membership of Africa –
IALE is open to researchers and resource managers who reside in
various African countries, as well as those in developed countries
who have particular interest in development or research projects
in any African country(s).
