Greetings and welcome to my web page! In this area, you will find
more detailed descriptions of my research and teaching activities here at
Clark University, where I am an associate professor in the
Department of
Psychology.
Broadly speaking, my research focuses on
understanding and addressing the
mental healthcare disparities that continue to
disproportionately affect individuals from low-income and racial/ethnic
minority backgrounds. So the
majority of my work focuses on individuals from lower-income and
racial/ethnic minority backgrounds. Clark University is a great place to do
this work for many reasons, including its location in Worcester,
Massachusetts, a northeastern, urban city.
Within this broader area, my work
has been primarily in four different areas:
(1) The first area is the
development and evaluation of effective depression prevention programs for
low-income racial/ethnic minorities. Some of this work in the past has been
with children; my current work involves low-income Latino parents.
(2) Second, I have
conducted several studies that examine sociocultural context might influence
the experience and expression of depression and other symptoms of distress.
(3) Third, I have recently
begun a line of research specifically aimed at understanding the
treatment-seeking behavior of low-income Latinos.
(4) I have also done some thinking and writing about
issues of race/ethnicity and psychology, both in psychotherapy and more
generally.
