Professor DeCew received a B.A. from the University of Rochester in 1970 and an M.A. and Ph.D. in 1976 and 1978, respectively, from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She served on the faculty at MIT for eight years beginning in 1978, has been at Clark since 1987 and served as Associate Dean of the College from 1999-2001. Beginning in the fall of 2003, Dr. DeCew began a four-year term as Chair of the Philosophy Department. She is affiliated with the programs in Women's Studies, Law and Society, and she is Director of Clark's Ethics and Public Policy concentration. Dr. DeCew served as Secretary-Treasurer for the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy (ASPLP) from 1997-2002. ASPLP is an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars in philosophy, law, and political science, with annual meetings which produce the Nomos volumes published by NYU Press.  She was recently appointed to the national American Philosophical Association's Committee on Philosophy and Law for a three-year term beginning in July 2006. 

Current Research and Teaching

Professor DeCew's research focuses on topics in theoretical and applied ethics, philosophy of law, social and political philosophy, and logic. She has been a Research Fellow at Harvard Law School and the Bunting Institute at Radcliffe and has received fellowships from the National Endowment for Humanities, the American Council for Learned Societies, and the American Association of University Women. In 1993 she earned Clark's Hayden Faculty Fellowship for excellence in teaching and research.

 

Dr. DeCew offers an introductory course in Social and Political Ethics and a first year seminar in Privacy Protection in Law and Ethics. She teaches upper level courses in Theories of Ethics, Philosophy of Law, and Social and Political Philosophy.
