W. Derek Bowman received his M.A. in Humanities and Social Thought from New York University and is currently finishing his PhD in Philosophy at Brown University. He has taught at the University of Georgia, Tulane University, and Brown University.
Professor Bowman’s primary area of research is political philosophy, with additional research interests in ethics, moral psychology, epistemology, and ancient philosophy. His dissertation argues that utopian theories are indispensable in setting normative standards for actual social institutions, even in cases where they fail to provide direct guidance for political action.
