Welcome

As a student in one of our programs--mathematics, computer science or bioinformatics--you will learn from internationally known researchers who are also dedicated teachers. Professors are current on what's happening in their fields and can prepare you for industry or graduate school. A variety of courses in pure and applied mathematics, as well as in theoretical and applied computer science, provide the necessary foundation and practical knowledge that will enable you upon graduation to pursue advanced degrees, or a career in the financial, insurance or industrial sectors.

The opportunity is also available to double-major in mathematics and computer science, or to choose as a concentration our interdisciplinary program in the growing field of bioinformatics. If you have a variety of interests, you can combine your mathematics and/or computer science studies with other disciplines in the natural or social sciences, or in the humanities. Increasingly popular are majors in computer science or mathematics along with courses in economics and business.

Small-Department Nurturing with Big-University Quality

Because our Department is small, you'll enjoy small class size and close academic relationships with fellow students and the faculty. As a member of our community, you will learn in a non-competitive, friendly environment. Beyond the classroom experience, you will have the opportunity to extend and apply your knowledge by working on research projects, or by becoming an intern in one of many local companies. If you are intrigued by logical puzzles and mathematical games, you will join us for weekly tea and cookies. If you like a challenge, you can join the Math Problem Solving Team and participate in the Putnam Competition, a national mathematics competition for college students. We have numerous students involved in the Computer Gaming Club.

We would especially like to draw your attention to our exciting First Year Research Groups and hope that you will join one of them. They will give you a chance to work side by side with a faculty member on interesting, cutting-edge research projects. Most other schools require years of course work before you actually can participate in any significant research. We get you started the moment you step in the door!
