Elinor Ostrom has gained international prominence for her representation of game theory, that field of political science that analyzes rational choice. In recognition of her pathbreaking work, she was awarded the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science at Uppsala in 1999, the first woman to receive that honor. In 1996 the University Policy Studies Organization gave her the Mirian Mills Award for being an outstanding woman in the field of policy studies. She sits on a number of advisory committees, among them the MacArthur Foundation Advisory Committee, Economics and Policy Initiative; National Academy of Sciences, Committee on Human Dimensions of Global Change; and the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council, Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE).
