Independent Scholar and Marsh Institute Distinguished Scientist
"Navigating the Sustainability Transition"
Friday, December 3, 1999, 1:30 pm Dr. Kates is the Vice-Chair of the National Research Council Board on Sustainable Development. From 1986 to 1992 he directed the Alan Shawn Feinstein World Hunger Program at Brown University. For 25 years prior to 1986, he held various teaching and research posts in the Graduate School of Geography and the Center for Technology, Environment and Development at Clark University. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Medal of Science (1991), the MacArthur Prize Fellowship (1981-85), and an honorary degree from Clark University (1993). A member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he is also a foreign member of the Academia Europaea and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served as president of the Association of American Geographers in 1993-94. |
